dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractBu makale, Türkiye’nin ilk kadın millî voleybolcularından biri olan Fatma Egemen Engin’in spor hayatını, 1950’lerin Türkiye’sinde voleybolun gelişimini ve toplumun spora dair bakış açısındaki değişimleri mikro tarih perspektifinden incelemektedir. Aile desteği, okul yaşantısı ve voleybolun sosyal bağlamı üzerine yoğunlaşan bu araştırma, Engin’in kariyerine nasıl adım attığını, karşılaştığı zorlukları ve bu zorluklar karşısındaki duruşunu ele alır. Ayrıca, dönemin Türkiye’sindeki voleybolun durumu, yabancı sporcularla karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilir ve voleybolun Fatma Egemen Engin’in yaşamındaki etkileri analiz edilir. Röportaj verileri birincil kaynak olarak kullanılırken, akademik makaleler ve arşiv belgeleri de destekleyici materyaller arasında yer alır.
dc.description.abstractThis paper explores the life and career of Fatma Egemen Engin, one of Turkey’s first female national volleyball players, within the context of volleyball’s development in 1950s Turkey. It examines how family support, school life, and social environment influenced her journey into volleyball. Additionally, the study compares the state of volleyball in Turkey with that of other countries during the same period, highlighting Engin's resilience in the face of challenges. Using primary data from interviews and supplementary secondary sources, the paper investigates the broader socio-cultural factors affecting women's participation in sports and evaluates the role volleyball played in Engin's personal and professional life.
