dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractProf. Dr. Muzaffer Arıkan, İspanyol-Türk ilişkileri ve Türk Denizcilik Tarihi alanları başta olmak üzere pek çok alanda çalışmış ancak hak ettiği değeri görememiş önemli bir tarihçidir. Mezun olduğu Ankara Üniversitesinde akademisyen olarak görev alan Prof. Dr. Arıkan, bu üniversitedeki Türk-İspanyol Kürsüsü’nü ve İspanyol Dili ve Edebiyatı bölümünün kurucusudur. Madrid Otonom Üniversitesinde de çalışmalar yapmış, orada Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümünü kurmuştur. İspanyol kültürünün Türk milletine tanıtılması açısından oynadığı önemli rol sebebiyle kendisine İspanya Kraliyet Yüksek Liyakat Nişanı ve Katolik Isabella’nın Nişanı verilmiştir. Türkiye’deki yıllarında Türk Tarih Kurumunda da görev almıştır. Bunların dışında; Bodrum Meteor Koyu civarında yaptığı ağaçlandırma çalışmaları, bir İspanyol şehriyle Bodrum’u kardeş şehir ilan etme projesi, Ankara Kulübü üyeliği, Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih Coğrafya Fakültesi Mezun ve Müntesipleri Derneği kuruculuğu ve başkanlığı, Ankara’da buğday üretimi yapan çiftçiler için bir kooperatif kuruculuğu gibi pek çok çalışmayla topluma ve sosyal hayata katkı sağlamıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractProf. Dr. Muzaffer Arıkan is an underrated and important historian who had been worked on such as but not limited to the history of Turkish-Spanish relations and Turkish Navy. Prof. Dr. Arıkan, who had been working as a scholar at the university he graduated from, have founded the Turkish-Spanish Chair and Spanish Language and Literature department in Ankara University. He also has founded the Turkish Language and Literature department in the university he had been working in, Madrid Autonomous University. Thanks to the important role he had on the matter of introduction of Spanish culture to Turkish nation, he had been awarded the Order of Civil Merit and the Order of Isabella the Catholic. During the years he spent in Turkey, he had worked at Turkish Historical Society. Apart from these; he had contributed to the society and the social life by the afforestation in the Meteor Bay, his endeavours to declare Bodrum and a Spanish city as twin towns, his membership to Ankara Kulübü, his foundership and chairmanship in the Ankara University Faculty of Language History and Geography Alumni Association, his foundership in a cooperative for the wheat farmers in Ankara.en_US
