dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractYeldeğirmeni, İstanbul’un Kadıköy semtinde bulunan, tarih boyunca farklı amaçlarla kullanılmış bir mahalledir. Adını, 1774-89 yılları arasında Padişah I. Abdülhamit tarafından Osmanlı ordusunun un ihtiyacını karşılamak amacıyla yaptırılan un değirmenlerinden aldı. Mahalle, 19. yüzyılın sonlarında Kuzguncuk, Dağhamamı mevkiinde çıkan büyük yangın ve 20. yüzyılın başlarında Haydarpaşa Garı’nın inşası nedeniyle İstanbul’un ve Anadolu’nun; hatta Avrupa’nın dört bir yanından göç eden Müslüman Türk ve gayrimüslim ailelerle çok kültürlü bir kimlik kazandı. Bu çok kültürlü kimlik, 20. yüzyıl boyunca mahallenin mimarî dokusunu ve sosyal ilişkilerini şekillendirdi. Mahallenin son yıllarda geçirdiği hızlı ve kontrolsüz değişim, eski mahalle kültürünün zayıflamasına neden oldu ve mahallenin eski ve yeni sakinlerini karşı karşıya getirdi.en_US
dc.description.abstractYeldeğirmeni is a neighborhood, which, throughout history, has been used for many purposes, now located in Kadıköy district of İstanbul. It derives its name from four flour mills, which were built during the years 1774-89 by Sultan Abdülhamit I for the purpose of feeding the Ottoman army. The neighborhood has gained a multi-cultural identity with the Turkish and non-Muslim families who migrated to Yeldeğirmeni from other districts of İstanbul, Anatolia, and even Europe upon the great fire of Dağhamamı, Kuzguncuk during late-19th -century and the construction of the Haydarpaşa Station in early-20th-century. This multi-cultural identity shaped the architectural texture and social relations of the neighborhood. The rapid and uncontrolled change that the neighborhood has been through in the last years, weakened the old neighborhood culture and brought face to face the old and new residents.en_US
