dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstract17 Ağustos 1999 Kocaeli, Gölcük merkezli gerçekleşen Marmara Depremi, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nde meydana gelen en büyük ikinci depremdir. Marmara Depremi 18.373 kişinin ölümü ve on binlerce kişinin yaralanması ile sonuçlanmıştır. Ağır hasar alan şehirlerin düzenlenebilmesi, evlerin ve yeni binaların tekrar yapılması adına pek çok çalışma başlatılmış, şehirler adeta baştan inşa edilmiştir. Bu projede, depremin ardından düzenlenen sağlık hizmetleri, sivil toplum örgütlerinin rolü, barınma ihtiyacının giderilmesi ve acil durum önlemleri gibi idari çalışmaların zor şartlar altında nasıl planlandığı ve uygulamaya konduğu, depremin hemen ardından atanan dönemin Kocaeli Valisi Kemal Önal ile yapılan röportajla incelenecektir. Bunların yanı sıra vatandaşın deprem sırası ve sonrasında karşılaştığı sosyoekonomik problemler de depremzedelerden Neyir Tek ile yapılan röportajdan üzerinden anlatılacaktır. Bu problemler devlet ve vatandaşın gözünden olmak üzere iki farklı açıdan karşılaştırılacaktır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe Marmara Earthquake, which took place on 17 August 1999 in Kocaeli, Gölcük, is the second largest earthquake that occurred in the Republic of Turkey. The Marmara Earthquake resulted in 18,373 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries. A lot of work has been started in order to arrange the heavily damaged cities, to reconstruct the houses and new buildings, and the cities have been rebuilt from scratch. In this project, how administrative works such as health services, the role of non-governmental organizations, meeting the need for shelter and emergency measures were planned and implemented under difficult conditions will be examined through an interview with the Kocaeli Governor Kemal Önal, who was appointed right after the earthquake. In addition to these, the socio-economic problems faced by the citizens during and after the earthquake will be explained through the interview with one of the earthquake survivors, Neyir Tek. These problems will be compared from two different perspectives, from the perspective of the state and the citizen.en_US
