Bulgaria hosted Turks on its lands for a long time, however, after World War 2, both Turkey and Bulgaria changed their political policies. One of the outcomes of these changed policies after 1950 was the Turkish population that Bulgaria hosted on its lands. Bulgaria was oppressing Turks, and was trying to assimilate them and forcing them to migrate. Turkey, on the other hand, implemented policies to Bulgarian Turks to help them with immigration process. One of the settlements that shelters many Bulgarian Turks today is Göçmen Neighborhood in Mersin city. Immigrants who settled in the Göçmen Neighborhood contributed to the local economy and became a part of the neighborhood’s culture after a difficult migration process.
