Clarence Douglass Ussher (1870-1955) was an American missionary doctor associated with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). He spent the larger part of his missionary life in Van, Ottoman Empire. Using his autobiography, letters, reports and other secondary sources, this paper aims to describe and analyze Ussher’s life as a missionary doctor in Van. Our paper looks at his personal life, a brief biography of his wife Elizabeth Ussher, and how he perceived the culture of Ottoman Turkey. The paper also aims to highlight areas of bias in his narrative especially concerning his accounts of Turkish- Armenian conflict.en_US
