dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractBu metinde; Osmanlı İmparatorluğu dönemindeki kölelik sistemi mirası, Afro-Türk topluluğunun Cumhuriyet sonrasındaki yaşamları üzerindeki etkileriyle birlikte Hasköy özelinde ele alınmaktadır. Cumhuriyet dönemi boyunca Afro-Türklerin karşılaştığı sosyal, ekonomik ve kültürel zorluklar, metnin ana odak noktalarını oluşturmaktadır. Kölelik hukuku ve yasalarının Cumhuriyet döneminde nasıl evrildiği, Afro-Türklerin yerleşim süreçleri ve bu süreçlerin topluluk üzerindeki etkileri incelenmektedir. Cumhuriyet sonrası Afro-Türk topluluğunun İzmir'e entegrasyonu, kültürel kimliklerini koruma çabaları ve Türk toplumuyla etkileşimleri, Hasköy özelinde incelenmiş ve köy sakini Güngör Delibaş ile yapılan röportajla desteklenmiştir. Sosyoekonomik açıdan, Afro-Türklerin Cumhuriyet sonrasında yaşadığı yerel ekonomik koşullar ve bu koşulların topluluk üzerindeki yansımaları ele alınmaktadır. Ayrıca, Afro-Türklerin Türk toplumu içerisindeki yerleri ve bu süreçte geçirdikleri değişimler, metinde detaylı bir şekilde tartışılmaktadır.
dc.description.abstractIn this text, the legacy of the slavery system during the Ottoman Empire is examined in the specific case of Hasköy, with its effects on the lives of the Afro-Turkish community after the Republic. The social, economic and cultural challenges faced by Afro-Turks during the Republican period are the main focal points of the text. How slavery law and legislation evolved during the Republican period, the settlement processes of Afro-Turks and the effects of these processes on the community are examined. The post-Republican Afro-Turkish community's integration into Izmir, their efforts to preserve their cultural identity and their interactions with Turkish society are examined in the specific case of Hasköy and supported by an interview with Güngör Delibaş, a resident of the village. From a socio-economic perspective, the local economic conditions that Afro-Turks experienced after the Republic and their reflections on the community are discussed. Furthermore, the place of Afro-Turks in Turkish society and the changes they have undergone in this process are discussed in detail in the text.
