dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST209) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractMakalemizde, American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions’ın (ABCFM) o zamanlar Osmanlı Devleti’nin hükümdarlığı altında olan Yakın Doğu’ya gönderdiği ilk iki misyoner, Pliny Fisk ve Levi Parsons’un yaptıkları çalışmalarının bölgedeki ilerideki gelişmeleri nasıl etkilediğini anlatıyor. Bununla beraber, makalemiyi üç temel odak noktası altında ele alıyoruz: birincisi, Parsons ve Fisk’e verilen talimatları inceliyoruz, sonrasında ise bu talimatların nasıl olaya çevrildiğine bakıyoruz ve son olarak misyonun esnasında nelerin başarıldığına ve yapılan eylemlerin gelecekeki misyonerleri nasıl etkilediğini ele alıyoruz. Bunun üzerine makalemiz Amerika’lı misyonerlerin Kudüs’e verdiği önemi ve misyonerlik aktivitelerinin başarısın matbaanın kullanılmasının önemli bir yeri olduğunu vurguluyor.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe topic of the paper refers to the work done by Parsons and Fisk, two of the first missionaries to the Ottoman empire and how their actions had a long term impact on the future missionaries in the region. The Paper as a result of this has three basic focal points, the instructions given to the Parsons and Fisk, how those instructions were carried out and what was achieved during the mission itself and the impact their actions had on how future missionaries conducted themselves. A special focus is also seen on the Importance placed on Jerusalem, the impact of the printing press, and the role of Smyrna as a port city in the success of the mission of Parsons and Fisk.en_US
