dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | en_US |

dc.description.abstract | Bu araştırmanın konusu üniversite reformunun gerçekleşmesinde ve yükseköğretim kurumlarında araştırmaya dayalı eğitim anlayışının benimsenmesinde büyük katkıları olan ilk doktoralı Türk matematikçi Kerim Erim’dir. Bu araştırmada Kerim Erim ile ilgili belgelerden ve yayınlardan; torunu Gülsin Onay, kızı Gülen Erim, damadı Joachim Reusch ve bilim tarihçisi Osman Bahadır’dan edinilen bilgilerden yararlanılarak Kerim Erim’in özel hayatı ve akademik hayatı anlatılmıştır. Kerim Erim Türkiye’de araştırmaya ve modern eğitim gereksinimini karşılamaya yönelik bir eğitim anlayışının benimsenmesinde önemli rol oynamıştır. Bu yüzden Kerim Erim’i anlamak ve bilmek, Türkiye’deki akademinin gelişimini gözlemleyebilmek ve Kerim Erim’i bir öncü olarak rol model alabilmek açısından önem taşımaktadır. Kerim Erim’in ilk doktoralı Türk matematikçi olması, Türkiye’deki araştırma ekolünün oturmasındaki katkıları, üniversite reformuna etkileri ve Einstein ile görüşmeleri; Erim’in Türk bilimi açısından önemini anlamamızı sağlayan bazı örneklerdir. | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | The subject of this research paper is about Kerim Erim, the first Turkish mathematician with PhD, and who had an important role in adopting University Reform and research based education in Turkey. In this research, personal and academic life of Kerim Erim are reported by using job related documents and publications. Personal information about him is obtained from his granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law; information about how influential Kerim Erim is for history of Turkish science is obtained from the historian of science Osman Bahadır, who has done many studies about Erim and improvement of science in republican period. To know and understand Kerim Erim, who has a major role in meeting the need of modern and research based education style, is vital in respect of taking him as a role model and a precursor, and observing the improvement of science in Turkey. Being the first Turkish mathematician with PhD, Erim’s contributions in adopting research based education in Turkey, his effects on University Reform and his meetings with Einstein are some examples which help us comprehend the importance of Kerim Erim for Turkish science. | en_US |
