dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractBoyoz, İzmir bölgesinde meşhur ve sıklıkla tüketilen bir hamur işi olmakla birlikte Sefarad Yahudilerine dayanan tarihsel bir geçmişe de sahiptir. Alsancak Dostlar Fırınının kurucusu Mustafa Akar ve onun ölümünden sonra işletmeyi yeniden canlandıran kızı Berrinm Akar Rasuli de boyozun İzmir’de ünlenmesine ve yayılmasına önemli katkılar sağlamıştır. Son yıllarda da meşhur bir yiyecek olarak boyozun, İspanya’daki Musevilerden başlayarak İzmir’e ulaşmasını sağlayan süreç farklı alt başlıklarda incelendi. Öncelikle boyozun genel tanımı, kelimenin kökeni, yapılışı ve temel özelliklerinden bahsedildikten sonra Türkiye’ye geliş süreci ve hangi kültürlere dahil olduğu yazıldı. Ardından yakın tarihte boyozu üne kavuşturan ve Alsancak Dostlar Fırınının kurucusu olan Mustafa Akar’ın hayatı ve fırını tarihi anlatıldı. Mustafa Akar’ın ölümünden sonra işletmeyi devralan ve canlandıran kızı Berrin Akar Rasuli’nin yaşadığı süreç, kendi kişisel hayatı ve fırının bugüne kadar geçirdiğ süreçlerden bahsedildi. Boyozun etkileri ve nasıl İzmir’e özgü bir lezzet olduğunun üzerinde duruldu.
dc.description.abstractBoyoz has a historical background dating back to Sephardic Jews who came to the Aegean region in 15th century. It is also a famous pastry which is known by the population. The founder of Alsancak Dostlar Fırını and his daughter Berrin Akar Rasuli ,who run the business after her father’s death, did many contributions to publicise boyoz in Izmir. Gaining popularity in the last decades, the journey of boyoz from Sephardic Jews to a pastry shop in Izmir is explained in different sub topics. Firstly the general definition, the information on where the word comes from, cultural influence which shapes the history of boyoz especially in Izmir region and the historical process explaining how boyoz become a phenomena in Izmir are mentioned. Later on, a brief autobiography of the founde of Alsancak Dostlar Fırını Mustafa Akar and her daughter Berrin Akar Rasuli is given with the historical lifespa of the pastry. In addition, it is indicated that how Izmir became famous for boyoz and also how boyoz influences the culture.
