dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTürk iş insanı Akın Öngör, bankacılık alanındaki başarılarıyla ve hayata geçirdiği sosyal projeleriyle saygıdeğer bir iş adamı ve Garanti Bankasının eski genel müdürüdür. Çocukluk yılları ve eğitim hayatındaki deneyimleri, Öngör’ü çekingen biri olmaktan çıkarıp atılgan biri haline getirdi. Meslek hayatına ilk atıldığında, Garanti Bankasında yer almadan önce, farklı pozisyonlarda çalıştı. Garanti Bankasında geçirdiği yıllarda devrimsel yenilikler yaratarak Türk iş dünyası isimlerinin arasında önemli bir yer elde etti. Başarılı kariyerinin yanı sıra çeşitli hobileri ve projeleriyle de ön plana çıktı. Şaraplara özel bir ilgi duyan Öngör, kendi markası olan Selendi Şarapları’nı kurdu. Ayrıca eşi Zeynep Gülin Öngör’ün kız çocuklarının eğitim yollarını açma isteğinin yerine getirerek Zeynep Gülin Öngör Kız Teknik ve Meslek Lisesini kurdu. Öngör, geniş yelpazede yer alan hayat tecrübelerine ek olarak doğayla iç içe bir yaşam biçimi benimsedi. 2015’te Dünya Doğayı Koruma Vakfının (WWF) Türkiye ayağında CEO’luk pozisyonunda göreve başlayan Öngör, sürdürülebilirlik çalışmalarına da tanıklık etti. Ayrıca kendisi için ayrı bir önemi olan yelken sporu, hayatında çeşitli başarılara imza atmasına yardım etti. Atlantik ve Pasifik Okyanuslarını yelkenliyle geçmeyi başardı. Hayatın farklı yönlerine tanıklık eden Öngör, çok yönlü ve başarılı bir iş insanıdır.
dc.description.abstractAkın Öngör is a Turkish businessman and former General Manager of Garanti Bank, respected for his social projects and achievements in the banking sector. His childhood and educational experiences transformed Öngör from a timid person to an assertive individual. When he first started his career, he worked in different positions before joining Garanti Bank. During his years at Garanti Bank, he created revolutionary innovations, hence became one of the most important figures in the Turkish business world. In addition to his successful career, he also stood out with his various hobbies and projects. Having a special interest in wines, Öngör founded his own brand, Selendi Wines. Moreover, he established the Zeynep Gülin Öngör Girls Technical and Vocational High School, fulfilling his wife Zeynep Gülin Öngör’s wish to pave the way for girls’ education. Önder has adopted a lifestyle intertwined with nature, besides his wide range of life experiences. In 2015, Öngör started working as the CEO of the Turkey branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and witnessed their sustainability efforts. Furthermore, sailing, which has a special importance for him, has helped him achieve various successes in his life. He managed to cross the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans by sailboat. Having witnessed different aspects of life, Öngör is a versatile and successful business person.
