dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractBu makale ilk Türk tasarım ve yapıma sahip olan geminin mucidi, asker ve Ordinaryüs Profesör Ata Nutku’nun profesyonel hayatını ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti denizcilik tarihi üzerindeki etkilerini incelemektedir. Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarının mühendisi olan Ata Nutku, gemi tasarım ve üretim konularında önemli çalışmalar yaparak pratik alanda kendini ispatlamıştır. Ayrıca hem İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi gibi çeşitli eğitim kurumlarından akademik kadroda bulunarak hem de yenilikçi patentler alarak kendini teorik alanda da gösteren önemli bir Cumhuriyet değeri olmuştur. Çalışma, Mehmet Şevki Şekerefeli’nin Ata Nutku’ya ait kişisel arşivi, dönemin çeşitli gazete haberleri, farklı yazılı kaynaklar ve torunu Sırma Nutku ile gerçekleştirilen röportaj temel alınarak tamamlanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda Nutku’nun özellikle Türk denizcilik tarihindeki önemi ve askeri alandaki katkıları vurgulanmıştır.
dc.description.abstractThis article examines the professional life of the inventor of the first Turkish-designed and built ship, soldier, and Ordinary Professor Ata Nutku, and his influence on the maritime history of the Republic of Turkey. Ata Nutku, an engineer in the early years of the Republic, proved himself in the practical field by making important studies on ship design and production. He also became an important value of the Republic by being an academic staff member at various educational institutions such as Istanbul Technical University and obtaining innovative patents, which shows him in the theoretical field. The study was completed based on Mehmet Şevki Şekerefeli's archive of Ata Nutku, various newspaper reports of the period, different written sources, and an interview with his granddaughter Sırma Nutku. As a result of the research, Nutku's importance in Turkish maritime history and his contributions to the military field were emphasized.
