| dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | |

| dc.description.abstract | Akraba evliliği, yüzyıllardır hem dünyada hem de Türkiye’de süregelen bir gelenektir. Özellikle Türkiye’nin doğu bölgesinde ve aşiretler arasında çok yaygın olan bu gelenek, günümüzde de varlığını beklenilenin üstünde bir oranla devam ettirmektedir. Cumhuriyet’in ilanı sonrası ve özellikle 1968 yılından itibaren yapılan çalışmalar ile Türkiye’de akraba evliliklerinin tarih boyunca kadınlar ve çocuklar üzerinde ciddi sorunlar doğurmuştur. Araştırmada Türkiye’de akraba evlilikleri oranının en fazla olduğu illerden biri olan Hatay’a odaklanıldı. Özellikle Samandağ, Reyhanlı ve Yayladağı ilçelerinde, akraba evliliklerinin kültürel yapılanma yüzünden kadınların hayatlarını kısıtlaması ve bu evlilikler yüzünden Türkiye’de görülen nadir genetik hastalıkların çoğalması gibi sonuçlar röportaj, gazete haberleri ve akademik yazılarla elde edilmiştir. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Consanguineous marriage has been a longstanding tradition both globally and in Turkey for centuries. This tradition is particularly prevalent in Turkey’s eastern region and among tribal communities, and it continues today at higher-than-expected rates. Studies conducted after the proclamation of the Republic and especially since 1968 have shown that consanguineous marriages in Turkey have historically caused significant issues for women and children. This research focuses on Hatay, one of the provinces in Turkey with the highest rates of consanguineous marriages. Specifically, the study highlights the districts of Samandağ, Reyhanlı, and Yayladağı, where consanguineous marriages have resulted in the restriction of women's lives due to cultural structures and the increase of rare genetic diseases in Turkey. These findings are supported by interviews, newspaper articles, and academic writings. | |
