dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractAnkara Okulu, Kore Savaşı sırasında Türk askerinin ailesi tarafından terk edilmiş ya da yetim kalmış çocukları toplayıp onlara bir yuva oluşturmak istemesiyle kurulmuştur. Okul Koreli çocuklara hem bir yuva olmuş hem de onların temel eğitim almalarına yardımcı olmuştur. Türk askeri kendi kumanyasını okuldaki çocuklar ile paylaşmış ve çocukların Türkçeyi ve Türk kültürünü öğrenmesinde önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Koreli öğretmenler aracılığı ile Koreli çocuklar eğitimden geri kalmamış ve savaşın ortamından bir nebze uzak kalabilmiştir. Bu araştırmada Kore savaşını aydınlatan gazete haberleri, akademik kaynaklar ve Ankara Okulu ile ilgili kitap yazmış olan Doç. Dr. Ali Denizli’nin kitabından faydalanılmıştır. Konunun uzmanı olan akademisyen Ali Denizli, Kore Gazisi şükrü Tandoğan ve Kore Gazisi Haydar Karakurt’un oğlu Burak Karakurt ile yapılan röportajlar ışığında Ankara Okulunun Kore ile Türkiye arasındaki ilişkilere katkısı, okulun kuruluş süreci ve Kore Savaşı’nda Türkiye’nin yeri anlatılmıştır. Türk askerinin savaş sırasında arka planda bırakılan kimsesiz kalmış çocukları tekrar yaşama döndürmesi ve yıkık dökük bir binayı okula dönüştürerek Kore’ye sosyal alanda da yardım etmesi Kore Savaşı’nın başka bir bakış açısından incelenmesine katkı sağlayacaktır.en_US
dc.description.abstractAnkara Okulu was established by Turkish soldiers in order to provide a place to stay for Korean orphans. This school helped Korean children to stay in a safe place and also it provided basic education for them. Turkish soldiers played a significant role in teaching these children the Turkish culture and they shared their food with these children. With the help of Korean teachers, these children were educated in a good way and they were isolated from the war area. In this research, we have benefitted from academic sources that provide information on the Korean war and Doç. Dr. Ali Denizli’s book on Ankara School. We also made interview with the academician Doç. Dr. Ali Denizli, Korea Veteran şükrü Tandoğan and the Korean Veteran Haydar Karakurt’s son Burak Karakurt on the topics regarding the relations between Korea and Turkey, the foundation of the school and the importance of Turkey in the Korean War. It is important to mention that Turkish soldiers found the Korean children who were left behind by their families and built a school for them in order to help Koreans not only in war but also in social aspects. Therefore, this can give us another perspective of looking at the Korean War.en_US
