The ELCO program is an educational program implemented by the French Government from 1973 to 2016. Its aim is to teach the children of immigrant families in France their native language and culture. The program was conducted on a voluntary basis in public schools, offering three hours of foreign language and culture classes per week to help migrant children avoid adaptation difficulties upon returning to their home countries and to facilitate their adjustment to education in France. The lessons were delivered by teachers from the partner countries, focusing on teaching children the Turkish language and culture. The program was evaluated based on its impact on preserving the cultural identities of migrant children and their ability to adapt to society; however, it was eventually discontinued due to emerging challenges and was restructured under the name EILE.
