Osmanlı’nın son ABD Büyükelçisi: Ahmetrüstem Bey

Abstract

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son yılları Türk tarihinde birçok açıdan bir kırılma noktası olarak kabul edilen bir dönemdir. Bu yıllarda yaşamış Türk diplomat, yazar ve siyasetçi Ahmet Rüstem Bey Osmanlı’nın son ABD büyükelçisi, Büyük Millet Meclisinin Ankara milletvekili ve Lozan görüşmelerinde Türk delegasyonu danışmanı unvanları da göz önünde bulundurulduğunda bu kırılma noktasını daha iyi kavramak önemli bir kişidir. Osmanlı’nın son dönemindeki ABD ile ilişkileri, Millî Mücadele dönemindeki katkıları, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kuruluş dönemindeki çalışmaları detaylı incelenerek Ahmet Rüstem Bey’in hayatı bu makalede araştırılmıştır. Ahmet Rüstem Bey’in ailesi, eğitimi, çalışmaları, diplomatik ve siyasi kariyeri çalışmanın odak noktaları arasındadır. Araştırmanın odağı çerçevesinde konuyla ilgili çalışmalar yapmış ve kitap yazmış araştırmacı gazeteci Süfyan Kızılarslan ile sözlü görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir; dönemin gazete haberlerine ve ilgili belgelerine, Ahmet Rüstem Bey ve çalışmalarından bahseden kitap ve makalelere başvurulmuştur.

The final years of the Ottoman Empire are considered a turning point in Turkish history in many aspects. Ahmet Rüstem Bey, a Turkish diplomat, writer and politician who lived during these years, is an important person to better understand this breaking point, considering his titles as the last US ambassador of the Ottoman Empire, Ankara deputy of the Grand National Assembly and advisor to the Turkish delegation in the Lausanne negotiations. Ahmet Rüstem Bey's life is researched in this paper by examining in detail his contacts with the United States in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, his contributions during the Turkish War of Independence, and his work during the period of foundation of the Republic of Turkey. Ahmet Rüstem Bey's family, education, studies, diplomatic and political career are among the focal points of the study. Within the framework of the focal points of the study, interviews were conducted with Sufyan Kızılarslan, a researcher and journalist who has conducted studies and written a book on the subject; newspaper reports and relevant documents of the period, books and articles mentioning Ahmet Rüstem Bey and his works were utilized.
