Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, which is in Samsun, was founded in 1845 when 8 Capuchin friars realized that there were many Latin Catholic’s who did not have a church to their own, where they could practice their religion freely. The Ottoman Empire has provided a respectful policy against the minorities that lived in The Ottoman Empire. Because of this policy the minorities were free to practice their beliefs. Eight Capuchin friars fled Georgia but they did not stray far away from the borders. When they saw that there were many Latin Catholics who did not have a church to their own in Samsun, they decided to stay in Samsun and spend the rest of their lives serving these individuals. In 1876 upon the special permit of the emperor at the time Murad the fifth, the Catholic Church of Mater Dolorosa was built. The church had a simple architecture plan and was built as a traditional Catholic Church. Thirty- seven years after the establishment of The Catholic Church of Mater Dolorosa in 1913 the Young Turks took over the church. After surviving the pressures of the Young Turks, the mayor wanted to tear down the church and make a parking lot instead. Throughout these attacks the church kept performing peaceful actions because of this policy they were able to survive through many years and attacks.en_US
