dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractAnkaralı Ermenilerin cumhuriyet öncesinde ve sonrasındaki yaşam koşulları, Ankara’da yaşayan azınlıklar hakkında yeterince fikir vermektedir. Ermenilerin özellikle Tehcir kanununu dışarıda bırakarak Ankara bağlamında ele alınmaları önem arz etmektedir. Bu sebeple, bu araştırmada, Tehcir kanunundan bağımsız olarak Ermenilerin Ankara’daki dini, sosyal ve ekonomik yaşamlarının aktarılması amaçlanmaktadır. Cumhuriyet öncesinde, o dönemde Ankara’nın merkezi olarak kabul edilebilecek Ulus çevresini mesken tutan Ermeni mahallelerinin, 1916 Ankara Yangını ile büyük bir kısmının yok olduğu bilinmektedir. Öte yandan, İstanbul’la karşılaştırıldığında Ermeni nüfusunun dini ve sosyal imkanları bakımından yetersiz kalan Ankara’nın, 6-7 Eylül olaylarından etkilenmesi kaçınılmaz olmuştur. Ermenilerin Ankara’daki köklü yerleşim yerlerinden biri olan Stanoz köyü ise Ermeni-Türk birlikte yaşama kültürünün önemli örneklerindendir. Fakat belirli birtakım sebeplerin etkisiyle 1950’li yıllarda Yenikent’e göçen köy halkıyla beraber hayalet bir yerleşkeye dönüşen Stanoz, Kevork Balaban’a hala daha ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Köyün tenhalaşmasının sebepleri, Stanoz köyü hakkındaki kaynak yetersizliğinden dolayı Kevork Balaban’ın deneyimleri ile aktarılmıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe living conditions of The Armenians of Ankara, before and after the establishment of the republic, give sufficient insight into the minorities living in Ankara. It is important that Armenians are treated in the context of Ankara, especially by leaving out the deportation law. For this reason, this research aims to convey the religious, social and economic lives of Armenians in Ankara regardless of the deportation law. Before the republic, it was known that most of the Armenian neighborhoods that inhabited the Ulus area, which could be considered the center of Ankara at that time, were destroyed by the 1916 Ankara Fire. On the other hand, it was inevitable that Ankara, which was inadequate in terms of religious and social opportunities of the Armenian population compared to Istanbul, would be affected by the events of 6-7 September. Stanoz village, one of the long-established settlements of Armenians in Ankara, is an important example of Armenian-Turkish cohabitation culture. However, Stanoz, which became a ghostly settlement with the villagers who migrated to Yenikent in the 1950s due to certain reasons, is still home to Kevork Balaban. The reasons for the seclusion of the village were conveyed by the experiences of Kevork Balaban due to the lack of resources about Stanoz village.en_US
