Being one of the largest domestic tobacco institutions in Türkiye and providing extensive employment opportunities for Tokat, despite all the challenges, Tokat Cigarette Factory was established in 1984 thanks to the support of the government and efforts of the leaders, and the domestic cigarette production was started. The factory became an important production institution for Tokat and Türkiye thanks to its modern production techniques and strategic location. However, due to the financial problems and adoption of neoliberal policies, the factory was privatized along with other factories under the enterprise TEKEL in 2008. The privatization decision was protested by the public, and a collective struggle of the public began. However, this rebellion failed and the factory was closed in 2010. The closure of the factory has been a controversial theme in Tokat and Türkiye.
