dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBu yazı Rusya ve Doğu Avrupa tarihinde uzman, dünyaca tanınan ve uzun yıllar Bilkent Üniversitesinde akademisyenlik yapmış olan tarihçi Norman Stone’un Türkiye yıllarını konu almaktadır. Bu bağlamda proje beş ana bölümden oluşmuştur. Bu bölümler, 1. Norman Stone: Türkiye’ye Gelişi (İlk Yıllar), 2. Norman Stone’un Türk Akademisindeki Rolü, 3. Norman Stone’un Türk Dış Politikası Hakkındaki Yorumlarının Etkisi, 4. Bir “Oryantalist” ve “Kültür Tarihçisi” olarak Norman Stone, 5. Norman Stone’un Türkiye Mirası şeklinde sıralanmıştır. Bu proje hazırlanırken Norman Stone’un çalışma arkadaşları ve öğrencileri ile yapılan röportajlardan yararlanılmıştır. Aynı zamanda Norman Stone’un köşe yazıları ve ölümünün ardından yazılan anma ve taziye yazılarından faydalanılmıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThis essay prepared within the context of HIST200 course is about the years of the late Professor Norman Stone in Turkey, an expert on Russia and Eastern Europe; a faculty member at Bilkent University for many years, and a worldwide renowned historian. The Project, therefore, aims at analysing his manifold career in five chapters. These are organized as 1. Norman Stone: Arrival in Turkey (The First Years); 2. Norman Stone’s Role in the Turkish Academic Life; 3. The impact of Norman Stone’s Striking Comments on Turkish Foreign Policy; 4. Norman Stone as an “Orientalist” and “Culture Historian”; 5. Norman Stone’s Legacy. During the preparation of the project, we interviewed Norman Stone’s colleagues and students and utilised his columns and obituaries.en_US
