dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractBuca Cezaevi, 1959 yılında hizmete girdiği yıldan yıkılışına kadar pek çok siyasi ve sosyal olaya tanıklık etmesi bakımından Türkiye’nin yakın tarihi için önemli bir konumda bulunmaktadır. Ekseriyetle ülke kamuoyunda grevler ve isyanlarla gündeme gelen Buca Cezaevi, 61 yıl boyunca ceza infaz kurumu olarak gerek mahkumlar gerek mahkum yakınları olarak pek çok kişinin hayatında derin izlere sahiptir. Kişiler bazındaki ve ülke kamuoyundaki etkisinin yanı sıra Buca Cezaevinin İzmir iline ve popüler kültüre de muhtelif pek çok etkisi olmuştur. Bıraktığı izler bakımından bu denli öneme sahip olan Buca Cezaevi, 2020 yılında İzmir’de etkili olan deprem sebebiyle hasar görmüş ve yıkımı kararlaştırılmıştır.
dc.description.abstractThe Buca Prison, which began service in 1959 and witnessed many social and political events until its demolition, is quite important due to its reflection on our country’s recent history. Frequently brought to the public’s attention through riots and strikes, Buca Prison had a profound impact on both prisoners and their families over its 61 years of service. Besides its effects on individuals and national public opinion, Buca Prison affected the city of Izmir and the popular culture in various ways. Buca Prison was decided to be demolished due to damage by the earthquake that struck Izmir in 2020.
