dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTürkiye'nin Doğu Anadolu bölgesi 1960'lardan bu yana, özellikle sol ve Kürt milliyetçisi gruplar tarafından düzenlenen ve 1994 Ulukale Köyü baskını gibi kayda değer olayların yaşandığı sürekli terör eylemlerine sahne olmuştur. Bu çalışma, 1990'lara odaklanarak terör eylemlerinin kökenlerini, nedenlerini, ilerleyişini incelemeye katkı sunarken Ulukale köyüne yapılan saldırı ve sonrasını incelemektedir. Ulukale'nin kendine özgü Türk-Sünni kimliğinden, saldırı kurbanlarını onurlandıran 2018 Ulukale Şehitler Anıtı'na uzanan zaman çizelgesinin izini sürmektedir. Ayrıca bölgenin kendine özgü kimliği ve hem terör faaliyetleri hem de dönemin devlet-köylü dinamikleri ile ilgisi nedeniyle önem kazanmakta olup çalışma Başbağlar Katliamı ile paralellikleri de incelemektedir. Devlet-köylü ilişkisine özel bir önem atfedilmekte ve terör faaliyetleri, bölge halkının teröre bakışı, etnik aidiyetleri ve köyün refah durumu gibi somut göstergeler üzerinden analiz edilmektedir.
dc.description.abstractTurkey's Eastern Anatolia region has witnessed persistent terrorist acts since the 1960s,primarily orchestrated by left-wing and Kurdish nationalist groups, with notable incidents like the 1994 Ulukale Village raid. This study delves into the origins, causes, progression, attack, and aftermath, focusing on the 1990s. It traces the timeline from Ulukale's unique TurkishSunni identity to culminates in the 2018 Ulukale Martyrs Monument honoring attack victims. This research gains significance due to the region's distinctive identity and its relevance to both terrorist activities and state-villager dynamics of the era. The study also delves into parallels with the Başbağlar Massacre. Special attention will be paid to the state-village members relationship, analyzing terrorist activities through tangible markers like the locals' perspectives on terrorism and ethnic affiliations, and welfare situation of the village.
