| dc.description | The History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards. | |

| dc.description.abstract | Şapka devrimi, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kuruluş yıllarında gerçekleşmiş önemli gelişmelerden biriydi. Bu devrim, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk tarafından, o dönemde normal gören fes, sarık gibi giyim eşyalarının yerine daha modern bir aksesuar olan şapkanın kullanılmasını sağlamak amacıyla gerçekleştirildi. Şapka devrimi, yürürlüğe girme aşamasında birçok tepki topladı. Ülkenin dört bir tarafında çeşitli ayaklanmalar ve protestolar gerçekleşti. Bu devrimin, gelenekselci kesim çoğunlukta olmak üzere halk tarafından bu kadar büyük bir tepkiyle karşılanmasının sebebi ise bu devrimin büyük ölçekli bir yenilik olması ve aynı zamanda bu dönemin alışılagelmiş dini motifleriyle çelişmesiydi. Müştak Tarba, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kuruluşuna ve bu dönem boyunca yapılan şapka devrimi gibi yeniliklere, Kurtuluş Savaşı dahil olmak üzere çeşitli savaşlara tanık olmuş ilk mebuslardan birisiydi. İdealist bir asker ve aynı zamanda tutkulu bir mühendis olan Müştak Tarba, yaşanılan çeşitli anlaşmazlıklar sebebiyle 1920 yılında mebusluk görevinden istifa etti. Bu araştırma kapsamında ilk mebuslardan Müştak Tarba’nın bakış açısından şapka devrimi incelendi ve değerlendirildi. Aynı zamanda Müştak Tarba’nın torunu olan Canan Yaşar’la yapılan röportaj bu değerlendirmeye kaynak olarak Tarba hakkında birçok bilginin edinilmesine yardımcı oldu. Ek olarak çeşitli yazılı kaynaklar, şapka devrimi ve dönemin meclisi hakkında bilgi edinmek için kullanıldı. | |
| dc.description.abstract | The Hat Revolution was one of the most pivotal developments during the founding period of the Republic of Turkey. The objective of this revolution was to prohibit the use of clothing items such as the fez and turban and to encourage the use of Western-styled hats instead. The Hat Revolution also encountered substantial opposition. It sparked uprisings and protests against it across the country. The widespread backlash was mainly due both to the revolution's extensive scale and also to its clash with religious motifs, which eventually led to harsh criticism and opposition from conservative segments of society. Müştak Tarba, a former deputy of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey who lived during the period of the War of Independence and the Hat Revolution, harshly objected to the Hat Revolution. He was an idealistic soldier and a passionate engineer. He resigned from the first Assembly due to disagreements he experienced with the government. This research examines and evaluates the Hat Revolution from the perspective of Müştak Tarba, who was born in 1882. In conducting this evaluation, an interview was carried out with Tarba's grandchild Canan Yaşar to gather information about him, and this interview was used as a primary source. Additionally, various written sources were utilized to analyze the Hat Revolution and the parliamentary context of the period. | |
