dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractİkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Almanya ve İtalya tarafından işgal edilen Yunanistan’da, büyük bir açlık ve sefalet ortaya çıktı. Normalde gıda ihtiyacını ithal eden Yunanistan, tarım faaliyetlerinin aksaması ve yirminci yüzyılın en ser t kışı ile yüz yüze kalması nedeni ile dışa bağımlı oldu. 1941 sonbaharından sonra Yunanistan’da "Büyük Açlık” diye tabir edilen dönem başladı. Yüz binlerce insanın açlık ve salgın hastalıklardan öldüğü bu dönemde, Yunanistan’a dostluk elini uzatan ilk ülke Türkiye oldu. Kızılay ve diğer yardım kuruluşlarıyla gıda maddeleri ve sağlık malzemeleri gönderen Türkiye, bu yardımları Kurtuluş Vapuru ile yaptı. Bu yardımların sembolü haline gelen Kurtuluş Vapuru, sadece maddi destek değil, aynı zamanda manevi destek de sağlayarak Atina’ya umut taşıyordu. Kurtuluş vapuru, altıncı seferine çıktığı sırada yoğun fırtına nedeni ile battı. Bu durum Türkiye’nin Yunanistan’a yaptığı yardımların önünü kesmedi. Kurtuluş Vapuru yerine Dumlupınar Vapuru ‘nu kiralayan Türkiye, yardımları kaldığı yerden devam ettirdi.
dc.description.abstractIn Greece, which was occupied by Germany and Italy during World War II, there was a great hunger and misery. Greece, which normally imports its food needs, became dependent on foreign exports due to the disruption of agricultural activities and the fact that it faced the harshest winter of the twentieth century. after the autumn of 1941, the so-called "Great Famine” period began in Greece. During this period, when hundreds of thousands of people died from hunger and epidemic diseases, Turkey became the country that extended the hand of friendship to Greece. Turkey, which sent foodstuffs and health supplies with the Red Crescent and other aid organizations, made these aids with the Kurtuluş Ferry. The Salvation Ferry, which became a symbol of these benefits, carried hope to Athens by providing not only financial support, but also moral support. The salvation ferry sank due to an intense storm while it was on its sixth voyage. This situation did not prevent Turkey's aid to Greece. Turkey, which rented the Dumlupınar Ferry instead of the Kurtuluş Ferry, continued the aid from where it left off.
