dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBu çalışmada 1942 tarihinde dünyaya gelmiş ve günümüzde de aktif olarak orkestra şefliği yapan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti tarihinin öncü orkestra şeflerinden Gürer Aykal’ın yaşamı ve Aykal’ın başta Türkiye’de olmak üzere klasik müzik türüne ve sanata katkılarının aktarılması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında, Gürer Aykal’ın çocukluğu, müzik ile tanışması ve Londra Kraliyet Akademisi, Guild Hall Müzik Okulu ve di Musica Sacra gibi Avrupa’nın önde gelen müzik okullarına kadar uzanan müzik eğitimini takip eden ulusal ve uluslararası arenadaki şeflik kariyeri üzerinde durulmuştur. Buna ek olarak, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Sanatçısı unvanlı Gürer Aykal’ın Türkiye’de klasik müziğin yükselişinde oynadığı rol ve Türkiye’de açtığı pek çok orkestra ile uluslararası arenada Türkiye’yi temsil etmek amacıyla verdiği emekler üzerinde de durulmuştur. Gürer Aykal ile yapılmış olan röportaj başta olmak üzere, hakkında yazılmış iki biyografi kitabı ve birçok kaynak değerlendirilerek Gürer Aykal’ın hayatını, orkestra şefliği kariyerini ve klasik müzik alanındaki katkılarını okuyucuya aktarmak amaçlanmıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe article studies the life and career of one of the pioneer orchestrate conductors in the history of The Republic of Turkey, Gürer Aykal. Within the scope of this research, Gürer Aykal’s childhood, his acquaintance with music and, his musical education that extends over to Europe’s leading music schools such as London Royal Academy, Guild Hall and, di Musica Sacra, are examined. Along with his conducting career in both the national and the international arena. Moreover, the State Artist Gürer Aykal’s role in the rise of classical music in Turkey and his contributions to opening many orchestras in Turkey have been analyzed, along with his efforts to represent Turkey in the international arena. Particularly the interview with Gürer Aykal himself, Aykal’s two biographies and various sources have been utilized with the purpose to convey the life, conducting career and, contributions on classical music genre of Gürer Aykal.en_US
