Harita Genel Müdürlüğü tarihi

Günümüzdeki adıyla Harita Genel Müdürlüğü 1880 yılında Genelkurmay Başkanlığı’na bağlı Harita ve Fen şubesinde Harita Komisyonu olarak kuruldu. Fransa’dan getirilen uzmanlarla komisyon ilk çalışmalarına başladı. Komisyonun asıl amacı Osmanlı haritasını hazırlamaktı. Takip eden yıllarda Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nın patlak vermesiyle, savaş sırasında ihtiyaç duyulabilecek askeri amaçlı haritalara hiç olmadığı kadar ihtiyaç duyuldu ve ülkenin bu ihtiyacını karşılamak için Harita Şubesi kurulmasıyla bu bölüm ülkenin dört bir yanında çeşitli faaliyetler sürdürdü ve farklı ölçekte birçok farklı bölgenin haritası çizdi. Kurtuluş Savaşı döneminde herhangi bir saldırıya her an hazırlıklı olup ordunun ihtiyaçlarını en iyi şekilde karşıladı. Cumhuriyetin ilanından sonra Harita Umum Müdürlüğü ismini alan kurum inkılaplar döneminde pek çok yenilik yaptı. Yapılan bu inkılaplar sadece askeri alanlarda değil, kamusal ve bilimsel alanlarda da ilerlemeyi sağladı ve Türkiye’yi haritacılık bakımından uluslararası standartlara taşıdı. Günümüzdeki ismiyle Harita Genel Müdürlüğü, ulusal haritacılık kurumu olarak, TSK birimleri tarafından iç güvenlik harekâtlarında ve sınır dışı operasyonlarda ihtiyaç duyulan haritaların ve coğrafi verilerin temininin yanı sıra sivil amaçlı haritacılık ve diğer coğrafi faaliyetler de yürütmekte, diğer projelere destek sağlamaktadır. GPS ve dijital haritacılık teknolojisini takiben kurumun alt birimleri son halini aldı ve haritacılık alanındaki son teknolojiler günümüzde kullanılmaya başlandı.

Known as the General Directorate of Mapping today, the Map Commission was first established under the Chief of General Staff closely tied to the Team of Mapping and Science in 1880. The commission started working with French experts who were brought to the Ottoman Empire. Its main purpose was to prepare the Ottoman Empire map. In the following years, with the outbreak of the First World War, military maps were needed more than ever before, and with the establishment of a Map Branch to meet this need of the country, this department carried out various activities all over the country and prepared maps of many different regions at different scales. During the War of Independence, the commission was always prepared for any attack and met the needs of the army in the best way. Having its name changed to the Public Directorate of Mapping, the institution has established many different sanctions throughout Turkey after the republic was founded and reformation was of the essence. These sanctions were not only military. They included, but were not limited to public service, educational purposes and scientific findings. The establishment of sanctions allowed the republic of Turkey to move forward and meet the international standards of mapping. The General Directorate of Mapping, as the national cartography institution, provides maps and geographic data needed by TAF (Turkish Armed Forces) units in internal security operations and overseas operations, as well as cartography and other geographical activities for civil purposes, and supports other projects.
