Arife Karcıoğlu ve Silifke’de çilekçilik

1960’larda Mersin ilinin Silifke ilçesi tarımsal ve ekonomik yönden sıkıntılı bir durumdaydı. Fakat Arife Karcıoğlu adlı bir ziraat mühendisinin çilekçilik üzerine yaptığı çalışmalar bu durumu tersine çevirdi. Karcıoğlu Silifke ilçesinin çilek üretimi için verimli bir bölge olduğunu keşfetti. Her ne kadar Silifke halkı bu meyvenin yabancısı olup bu tür bir girişime önyargılı yaklaşsa da Karcıoğlu’nun çilek üretiminden ne kadar çok gelir elde ettiğini gözlemleyince kendileri de çilek fideciliğine yöneldi. Bu tarımsal kalkınma Silifke ilçesinin ekonomik refah seviyesini yükseltti ve Silifke’ye çilek üretiminde ulusal bir tanınmışlık sağladı. Karcıoğlu’nun çalışmalarından bu yana çilek fideciliği hâlâ Silifke ekonomisinde önemli bir yere sahip. Bu çalışmada Silifke’nin çilek üretimi öncesi genel hali, Karcıoğlu’nun Silifke’deki çalışmaları, yöre halkının bu çalışmalara karşı tutumu, halkın çilek sayesinde ekonomik düzeyinin yükselişi ve Silifke’deki çilekçiliğin günümüzdeki durumu anlatılmaktadır.

In the 1960s, the Silifke district of Mersin province was struggling with agricultural and economic hardships. However, the efforts of an agricultural engineer named Arife Karcıoğlu on strawberry cultivation reversed this situation. Karcıoğlu discovered that Silifke district is a fertile region for strawberry production. Although the people of Silifke were unfamiliar with this fruit and approached such an initiative with prejudice, when they observed how much income Karcıoğlu earned from strawberry production, they joined to the strawberry cultivation too. This agricultural development increased the economic welfare of Silifke district and gave Silifke a national recognition in strawberry production. Strawberry cultivation still has an important place in Silifke's economy since Karcıoğlu's work. In this study, the general situation of Silifke before strawberry production, Karcıoğlu's studies in Silifke, the stance of the local people towards her works, the rise of prosperity of the people thanks to strawberries, and the current situation of strawberry cultivation in Silifke are discussed.
