dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractSir William James Redhouse İngiltere’de doğdu ve bulunduğu görev nedeniyle Osmanlı’ya geldi. Osmanlı’da Türkçe öğrenen Redhouse Osmanlı Devleti’nde tercüman olarak birçok uluslararası anlaşmada görev aldı. Bu dönemde hem Ortadoğu’da bulunan İngililz subaylarıyla halk arasındaki ilişkiyi geliştirmek hem de Türkçe ve İngilizce dilleri arasındaki bağı kurmak için bir sözlüğe ihtiyaç vardı. Saray sözlüğün yazımı için Redhouse’u görevlendirdi. Bu çalışmada ise genel olarak Redhouse’un aldığı eğitim, Osmanlı Devletinde aldığı görevler, sözlüğün yazım süreci, halkın sözlüğe ve Redhouse’a bakış açısı, sözlüğün sonraki eserlere ve Türk diline olan katkısı anlatıldı.
dc.description.abstractSir William James Redhouse was born in England and came to the Ottoman Empire due to his mission. He learned Turkish and worked as a translator in numerous international agreements. In that era, it was a necessity to have a dictionary in order to improve the connection between the common folk and English officers and also to create a connection between Turkish and English. By the palace, Redhouse was selected to write the dictionary. In this work, Redhouse’s education, Redhouse’s missions, the writing process of the dictionary, the perspective of common folk to both Redhouse and to the dictionary, dictionary’s effect to the upcoming works and to the Turkish language were told.
