dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTürkiye 1945-1991 arasındaki Soğuk Savaş döneminde tehlikeli bir pozisyona sahipti. Türkiye'nin kuzeydoğu komşusu olan Sovyetler Birliği, Türkiye'ye bir tehdit oluşturuyor ve Türkiye içerisindeki komünist faaliyetleri destekleyerek Türkiye'yi Doğu Bloğuna çekmeye çalışıyordu. Bu yüzden Türk devleti ve hükümetleri anti-komünist politikalar uygulamaya başlamıştı. Buna istinaden "kızıl" tehdidi ortadan kaldırmaya çalıştı ve bunun ültimatomu olarak Türkiye NATO'ya katıldı. Bu araştırmada meclis tutanakları, eski gazete haberleri ve bu camiadan olan siyasilerden alınan bilgiler aracılığı ile bu politikaların ne olduğu ve nasıl gerçekleştiği anlatılmıştır. Ayrıca 1960 ve 1980 arası dönemde global durum ve süper güçlerin arasında geçen olaylar ve bu olaylar sırasında Türkiye'nin durumu, bu politikaların şiddetini belirleyeceğinden bu olayların incelenmesi konumuz açısından önemlidir. Türk insanı komünizmi dine ve millete bakış açısından dolayı hep bir tehdit olarak görmüştür. Nitekim bu görüşün oluşmasında bu politikaların çok önemli yeri vardır ve nihayetinde başarılı olduğu söylenebilir.en_US
dc.description.abstractTurkey was in a critical position during the Cold War, which took place between 1945 and 1991. The Soviet Union, Turkey’s neighbor in the northeast, became a threat for Turkey by trying to make Turkey an ally of Eastern Bloc and supporting the communist activities in Turkey. Therefore, Turkish government started to adopt anti-communist policies. Based on that, the communist threat tried to be annihilated. Therefore, as an ultimatum of it, Turkey joined NATO. This research mentions what and how anti-communist policies of the period are taken in the light of information from parliamentary minutes, previous newspaper reports and politicians who have shared the anti-communist ideal. Besides, it is also important to examine the global situation, relationships of superpowers, and how Turkey was affected by them between 1960 and 1980; since they determined the strength of the policies. Communism has always been seen as a threat by Turkish people because of its approach to religion and nationality. Thus, in the establishment of this anti-communist view these policies have an important place and it could be said that they attained success to a certain level.en_US
