dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractTürk siyasetinde ve tıp alanında önemli bir figür olan Ord. Prof. Dr. Sadi Irmak’ın kızı Prof. Dr. Yakut Irmak Özden’in hayatı araştırıldı. Babası Mahmut Sadi Irmak (1904 -1990) tıp doktoru ve siyasetçidir. Türkiye'nin eski Başbakanlarından, ilk Çalışma Bakanı ve işçi sigortalarının kurucusudur. Sadi Irmak, Atatürk’ün sunduğu akademik fırsatlar sayesinde Avrupa’da tıp eğitimi alma şansı yakalamıştır ve başarılı bir hayat hikayesi yazmıştır. Babasının başarılı hikayesi, kızı Yakut Irmak Özden’in hayatını etkileyerek hem kendisini hem de babasını temsil ettiği başarılı bir hayat sürmesi için ilham kaynağı olmuştur. Eğitim hayatından başlayarak 1970’lerde Cenevre’de fen lisesinde eğitim görmeye layık görülen ilk kadın öğrenci olmuştur. Ulusal ve uluslararası çapta kadın-erkek eşitliğini savunmuş, sivil toplum kuruluşları (NGO) tarafından “Kaynak Kişilik” olarak seçilerek, 1985’te Nairobi’de toplanan Birleşmiş Milletler (BM) ‘Kadın On Yılı Dünya’ konferansında Türkiye’yi temsil etmiştir. Prof. Dr. Yakut Irmak Özden Darülaceze Vakfı ve Atatürk Kültür Vakfı kurucularından biri olmuş ve uzun yıllar boyunca Atatürk Kültür Vakfı’nın başkanlığını üstlenmiştir. Aynı zamanda Türkiye’de ilk kadın Rotary Kulübü üyesi olmaktadır. Yaptığı çalışmalar ülkemizde ve yurt dışında fark edilerek takdir toplamış ve çeşitli ödüllere layık görülmüştür. Uluslaşma ve Dil” konulu araştırması ile Yunus Nadi Ödülü, “Türkiye’de Kentleşme” araştırmasıyla Ali Naci Karacan Ödülü ve Türkiye-Almanya arasındaki bilimsel işbirliğine katkısı nedeniyle Erich Frank Madalyası bu ödüllerden bazılarıdır. Türkçe ve yabancı dilde yazdığı 70’ten fazla makalesi, biri Fransızca (Fransa’da bulunan) ve üçü Türkçe olmak üzere yayınlanmış dört kitabı bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Cumhuriyet tarihimizin ilklerine imza atan başarılı Türk kadını Prof. Dr. Yakut Irmak Özden’in ilham verici yaşam hikayesi ve hem Türkiye’de hem uluslararası alanda tanınan çalışmaları incelenecektir.en_US
dc.description.abstractIn this research report, the life of Prof. Dr Yakut Irmak Özden, who is the daughter of Ord. Prof. Dr Sadi Irmak, was examined in depth. Her father, Ord. Dr Mahmut Sadi Irmak (1904 -1990), was a medical doctor, the former Prime Minister of Turkey, the first Minister of Labor and the founder of Worker's Insurance in 1945. Making good use of the educational opportunities presented by Ataturk to bright students to study medicine in Europe, Sadi Irmak has lived a very successful life following his education. Hence, Özden's father positively impacted how she has led her life which was further explored in this paper. Beginning with her education in the 1970s, she was the first female student to attend a science high school in Geneva and initiated mixed-sex education. On significant national and international platforms, Özden promoted gender equality to the full extent. She was selected by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to represent Turkey at the International Women's Day conference organized by the United Nations in Nairobi in 1985. Prof. Dr Yakut Irmak Özden is one of the founders of the Darülaceze Foundation and Atatürk Cultural Foundation. In addition, for several years, she has served as the chairperson of the Atatürk Cultural Foundation. Among her pioneering efforts to represent women in under-represented aspects of the social life, Özden became the first female member of the Rotary Club in 1989. She is the recipient of several national and international awards: Yunus Nadi Award, Ali Naci Karacan Award and the Erich Frank Medal. With over 70 articles written in Turkish and foreign languages and four published books (she wrote one in French), Özden has contributed immensely to the research scopes of medicine, sociology, politics, gender equality, and education. Observing the significant work and notable achievements of Yakut Irmak Özden, the inspiring life and national and international works of successful Turkish women will be examined in this research.en_US
