Item Open Access The effects of salience and ordinal position of exhibit objects on visitor attention in digital exhibitions(Routledge, 2022-06-08) Zıraman, Ayça Turgay; İmamoğlu, ÇağrıThe aims of the present experiments were to investigate the impact of (a) ordinal position, (b) object salience (size and three-dimensionality), and (c) proximity to salient objects on visitor attention in digital exhibitions, and to make comparisons with trends observed in physical exhibitions. The results of two experiments involving 210 participants, conducted using a tablet computer, indicated that (a) the ordinal position and salience effects observed in physical exhibitions were also present in the digital medium; (b) however, the overshadowing effect by the salient objects on the adjacent ones observed in physical exhibitions did not seem to emerge when three-dimensionality was the salience parameter; and (c) the negative impact of the salient object’s presence on the overall attention to the exhibition observed in physical exhibitions seemed to be eliminated in digital exhibition environments regardless of the salience parameter.Item Open Access Gender and locality-related differences in circulation behavior in a museum setting(Routledge, 2009) Imamoğlu, C.; Yilmazsoy, A. C.The authors present the results of a case study conducted at the Sadberk Hanim Museum in Istanbul, which explored the relationship between gender and locality (being a native resident or foreign tourist) of visitors and their circulation behavior. Results indicated that visitor characteristics, particularly locality, had a significant impact on range and duration of circulation, but not on general patterns of route selection, such as the right-turn bias. Results are discussed with respect to the related literature.Item Open Access The relationship of screen material with visitor behavior in exhibition spaces(2022-04) Karacan, EvrimThe screen, with its diverse forms and materials, has been a part of the exhibition space as art practice as well as an integral part of human beings' lives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the screen materials on space formation through observing different screen materials and explore the relationship between the materials of screens and visitor, by addressing visitor behavior that is divided as attention and interaction in exhibition spaces. Previous studies were mostly elaborated in the field of media and art, and few research was found in the architecture field. Therefore, this study seeks to present a comprehensive approach by gathering media, art, and architecture perspectives together in the visitor studies in the context of exhibition spaces. An exhibition experiment was designed, and different instruments were used in the assessment of the participants’ behavior, experience, and feelings. A total of 32 participants were selected based on defined demographic parameters. The findings of this study presented that, the profession item showed a significant correlation with the screen preferences and screen materials have an impact on the architectural layout from visitors’ perspective in terms of its physical form and its influence on the layout. Lastly, screen materials have a significant impact on the amount of attention paid as well as on the number of visitor interactions with exhibit objects in exhibition spaces.Item Open Access A Simulation application for visitor circulation in exhibition environments(2009) Güler, Ömer KutayThe layout of the exhibit elements in an exhibition environment affects the visitor behavior whose receptivity and time are limited. This study proposes a simulation application for visitor circulation in exhibition environments in order to increase the number of visual contacts and active engagements received by each exhibit element. Consequently, the interior designer delivers an increase in the quality of the exhibition environment. The calculations of the proposed simulation application are based on the data that are collected from the previous literature related to visitor and exhibit element characteristics. The parameters of visitor characteristics involve the interest level, visit plans and fatigue level of visitors. The parameters of exhibit element characteristics involve the physical dimensions, viewing distance, attraction index and holding power of exhibit elements. In order to assess the functionality of the proposed simulation application, an example simulation of an exhibition environment is conducted. In the simulation of an exhibition environment, while all the input parameters are kept constant, the change in the layout of the exhibit elements resulted in different visitor circulation patterns and different visual contact and active engagement outcomes for each exhibit element. Observing and evaluating the various outputs of the simulation application that involve changes in the layout of exhibit elements might help a designer in judging his/her design decisions more clearly. Additionally, comparing the simulation application outputs of design alternatives might help the designer to prevent possible design errors in his/her exhibition layout.Item Open Access Visitor behavior in museum environments : an analysis of visitor circulation patterns in Sadberk Hanım Museum(2005) Yılmazsoy, Aslı CananIn this study, visitor circulation in museum environments is examined. The main concern is visitor characteristics and their influence on circulation patterns. In this context, a case study was conducted in one of the two sections of Sadberk Hanım Museum, Istanbul, in order to explore whether differences in visitors’ characteristics in terms of gender and locality have an effect on their circulation behavior. Evaluating these characteristics, the study found a significant relation between circulation behavior and demographics and underlies the importance of providing an effective and efficient museum experience for the diversified museum audience.
