Item Open Access A clustering-based method to estimate saliency in 3D animated meshes(Elsevier Ltd, 2014) Bulbul, A.; Arpa, S.; Capin, T.We present a model to determine the perceptually significant elements in animated 3D scenes using a motion-saliency method. Our model clusters vertices with similar motion-related behaviors. To find these similarities, for each frame of an animated mesh sequence, vertices' motion properties are analyzed and clustered using a Gestalt approach. Each cluster is analyzed as a single unit and representative vertices of each cluster are used to extract the motion-saliency values of each group. We evaluate our method by performing an eye-tracker-based user study in which we analyze observers' reactions to vertices with high and low saliencies. The experiment results verify that our proposed model correctly detects the regions of interest in each frame of an animated mesh. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.Item Open Access Discovering story chains: a framework based on zigzagged search and news actors(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2017) Toraman C.; Can, F.A story chain is a set of related news articles that reveal how different events are connected. This study presents a framework for discovering story chains, given an input document, in a text collection. The framework has 3 complementary parts that i) scan the collection, ii) measure the similarity between chain-member candidates and the chain, and iii) measure similarity among news articles. For scanning, we apply a novel text-mining method that uses a zigzagged search that reinvestigates past documents based on the updated chain. We also utilize social networks of news actors to reveal connections among news articles. We conduct 2 user studies in terms of 4 effectiveness measures—relevance, coverage, coherence, and ability to disclose relations. The first user study compares several versions of the framework, by varying parameters, to set a guideline for use. The second compares the framework with 3 baselines. The results show that our method provides statistically significant improvement in effectiveness in 61% of pairwise comparisons, with medium or large effect size; in the remainder, none of the baselines significantly outperforms our method. © 2017 ASIS&T.Item Open Access Exploiting navigational queries for result presentation and caching in Web search engines(John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2011) Ozcan, R.; Altingovde, I. S.; Ulusoy, O.Caching of query results is an important mechanism for efficiency and scalability of web search engines. Query results are cached and presented in terms of pages, which typically include 10 results each. In navigational queries, users seek a particular website, which would be typically listed at the top ranks (maybe, first or second) by the search engine, if found. For this type of query, caching and presenting results in the 10-per-page manner may waste cache space and network bandwidth. In this article, we propose nonuniform result page models with varying numbers of results for navigational queries. The experimental results show that our approach reduces the cache miss count by up to 9.17% (because of better utilization of cache space). Furthermore, bandwidth usage, which is measured in terms of number of snippets sent, is also reduced by 71% for navigational queries. This means a considerable reduction in the number of transmitted network packets, i.e., a crucial gain especially for mobile-search scenarios. A user study reveals that users easily adapt to the proposed result page model and that the efficiency gains observed in the experiments can be carried over to real-life situations. © 2011 ASIS&T.Item Open Access Increasing the sense of presence in a simulation environment using image generators based on visual attention(M I T Press, 2010-12) Ciflikli, B.; İşler, V.; Güdükbay, UğurFlight simulator systems generally use a separate image-generator component. The host is responsible for the positional data updates of the entities and the image generator is responsible for the rendering process. In such systems, the sense of presence is decreased by model flickering. This study presents a method by which the host can minimize model flickering in the image-generator output. The method is based on preexisting algorithms, such as visibility culling and level of detail management of 3D models. The flickering is minimized for the visually important entities at the expense of increasing the flickering of the entities that are out of the user's focus using a new perception-based approach. It is shown through user studies that the new proposed approach increases the participants' sense of presence. © 2011 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
