Item Open Access Critique by design: tackling urban renewal in the design studio(Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) Batuman, B.; Baykan, D. A.The dominant mode of urbanization in our contemporary world is marked by large scale urban renewal projects, which are deployed with little or no consideration given to the social predicaments. The urban design studio can serve as a domain in which critical reflections on urban issues can be incorporated into design works. In this article, we propose a methodology of 'critique by design', which does not seek to arrive at scientific knowledge but rather involves the development of urban design proposals critically engaging with the urban issues they address through conceptual approaches. We discuss our methodology through the case of an experimental studio work conducted in Ankara, Turkey at Bilkent University, Department of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture in 2011. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.Item Open Access Evaluation of interior shopping mall design within the context of urban public realm(Bilkent University, 1993) Parlar, Z. MerveThis work puts forth a different point of view for the evaluation of the design of interior shopping malls. In this approach, public interior spaces are defined and analyzed as a component of the urban public realm. The problems and concepts of interior shopping malls are analyzed in a historical perspective, after briefly introducing the relationship between the city and the public realm, the city and the interior shopping mall. Thus the aspects of urban public realm and the design criteria of interior shopping malls are obtained and defined. Finally, based on these aspects and criteria, interior shopping malls in Ankara are analyzed. The stages of development and typologies derived from these analyses are discussed in teims of the context of urban public realm. All researches and analysis aim to form a basis for an interdisciplinary study, and to draw attention to the interaction of 'exterior space', 'building mass' and 'interior space'.Item Open Access Market regeneration in line with sustainable urban development(MDPI, 2022-09-17) Borucka, Justyna; Czyż, Piotr; Gasco, Giorgio; Mazurkiewicz, Weronika; Nałęcz, Dorota; Szczepański, MarcinThis article presents the study of the optimal design solutions for regeneration of marketplaces. It examines the design variants for the revitalisation of the marketplace, in particular, investment in their modernisation in order to find the most optimal model for transforming these public spaces to have a significant impact on the city’s development. The research is a comparative analysis of the implementation of regeneration design models on the marketplace within the Oliwa district of Gdansk (Poland). The data for the case study design models includes analysis based on various optimisation criteria, taking into account the urban and economic aspects of the city landscape when selecting a specific space revitalisation design model. The implementation of regeneration investment includes a number of complex processes that must be sustainable and so require rational social and spatial planning, as well as proper organisation in terms of cost and time.Item Open Access Rethinking social inclusivity: Design strategies for cities(ICE Publishing, 2011) Afacan, Yasemin; Afacan, S. O.Cities have become more fragmented due to the increasing urbanisation of many parts of the world. There is more inequality and a growing complexity of social life in cities that leads to social exclusion and increasing social differentiation. This study approaches social inclusivity within the context of universal urban design and defines it as a vehicle for promoting human wellbeing, environmental wholeness and principles of participatory democracy. Mat urbanism - an urban form concept that is more organic and fluid than other urban forms and models - is proposed, alongside a universal design approach, to achieve the goals of sustainable communities and enhance quality of life. The relationship of mat urbanism to the features of high-quality environments and sustainable developments is questioned and illustrated with simple diagrams. The paper concludes with the importance of universally designed sets of regulatory practices regarding sustainable architecture and urban development - from individual buildings to the district and city-scale level. The contribution of this study is not only to explore the potentials of Smithson's configurations theoretically but also to open new means through which towns and cities can be planned in the future in order to promote social inclusivity, environmental responsiveness, sustainability and universal urban design.Item Open Access Urban design—or lack thereof—as policy: the renewal of Bursa Doğanbey district(Springer, 2017) Batuman, B.; Erkip, F.The role of urban design in urban policy making has been extensively discussed in recent years due to the insufficiency of existing applications in the complex structure of global urbanization. This paper aims at addressing the role of urban design as a policy instrument in urban politics through a case in one of the metropolitan cities of Turkey, Bursa. The case presented in the article reflects the emergence of a non-space in a city with a rich historic and cultural heritage. Lack of control and accountability, lack of communication between actors in the process and power coalitions are the main reasons of this process that caused the huge misfit between TOKI Doganbey settlement and the overall context. This settlement harmed Bursa’s identity tremendously and caused a lot of turmoil since none of the parties involved is content with the end product. We try to elaborate on the process and the role of various actors in shaping it. Turkey does not have a rich urban design experience although successful projects are seen in high-income housing settlements. We conclude that it is timely to start with a new approach to the discipline to prevent such failures with large impacts on the urban form and life. The need for a holistic approach seems imperative to establish the core of a new urban design discipline involving socio-spatial concerns. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
