Item Open Access Discouraged workers and the dominance of added worker effect : "the case of Turkey"(2009) Karaoğlan, Hanife DenizThis thesis includes two different studies. In the first chapter, we examine how socioeconomic factors affect the probability of being discouraged for the individuals who do not have a regular job. We find that the factors such as gender, age, marital status, education level, previous work experience, living in urban or rural areas, and Gross Domestic Product per capita level of the region that the individual lives have significant impact on the decision of the individual for leaving the labor force or not. Moreover, the reason of unemployment and the duration of unemployment of the individual who has previous work experience also affect this decision significantly. In the second chapter, we examine the dominance of Added Worker Effect for Turkey. We show that Added Worker Effect is significantly dominant over Discouraged Worker Effect. We also find that, in Turkey, motherhood is an obstacle for married women to participate in labor force. Finally, we conclude that Added Worker Effect is not a completely consequence of the economic crisis in Turkey. Both the income loss of the household head and the risk that household leader may loose his job drive married women into labor force more and cause them to work for more hours.Item Open Access The effect of real exchange rate on unemployment in Turkey(2007) Kılıçaslan, NilayThis thesis is intended to analyze the influence of real exchange rate on total and urban unemployment in Turkish economy over 1988 – 2006 periods by using the original work of Frenkel (2004) for Turkey. In addition to this analysis, an alternative model is suggested to overcome some limitations of Frenkel (2004). In this thesis, three channels of influence, namely macroeconomic channel, development channel and labor intensity channel, are taken into account in the search of unemployment’s response to changes in real exchange rate. The results for both analysis show that real exchange rate influences unemployment positively through labor intensity channel for both total and urban unemployment in Turkey. Moreover, suggested alternative model achieves to quantify the seperate effects of the influence channels which was not achieved in Frenkel (2004) due to the limitations of the model.Item Open Access Factors influencing the employment in the private manufacturing industry in Turkey(1993) Gülleroğlu, MuzafferIn this study I tried to analyze the effects of the factors such as price index, interest rate and wage index on the employment of the private manufacturing industry in Turkey.ln the model used for the study, not only the determinants itself but also their lags as a variable including the employment have been investigated. The effect ratios of these variables are analyzed and reasons are explained. The most important factor for the employment in the sector seems finally to be the three lagged price index. Because price index is the most volatile factor and effects all other variables indirectly. The second important factor is the one lagged real interest rate and the third one is the price index without lag.Item Open Access Main factors of unemployment in Turkey(1993) Tekin, GökhanThis study attempts to assess the main factors which are affecting unemployment behavior in Turkey. The candid variables are chosen in such a way that some relations have been enunciated for I’uikey and for some other countries. This research is trying to analyze the unemployment behaviour mainly in two time periods: The first scope is the period 1980-1990. The 1980s are characterized for its own features as a new era in Turkey. The relations for this period are .searched for ten variables: Unemployment ( with one lag), energy supply, credits, money supply, capital investments, investments realized by receiving subsidies from the government, inflation. Gross National Product, real wages and total labor force. Among these ten variables, stepwise variable selection method identified the statistically significant variables and by these variables a GLS model is formed in explaining the unemployment level. The second scope was the period 1970-1992 and the variables are labor productivity, import-export wedge, real wages and inflation which are used in explaining unemployment rate and level. It was found finally that capital investments influence the unemployment level on the one side (for the first period), labor productivity, import-export wedge, real wages and inflation affect unemployment level on the other side (for the .second period) and the labor productivity and import-export wedge affect also (for the second period) unemployment rate.Item Open Access Modelling the relationship between productivity, employment and wages in Turkish small and medium sized enterprises,1981-1998(2001) Demirel, GörkemliThis thesis analyzes the empirical relationship between wages and productivity as well as the relationship between wages and employment in Turkish manufacturing industry. Unlike the previous studies done for manufacturing industry, in this study the size definitions of manufacturing industry, sectoral distribution and the sectoral division between public and private sector are considered. In the empirical part of the thesis, first wage and productivity and wage and employment relationships are estimated by using OLS method. After finding out both wage-productivity and wage-employment relationships are significant, descriptive growth rate comparisons are made for the period of 1981-1998. The main conclusion that emerges from both analyses is that relationship between variables of interest is valid. Wages, productivity and employment relationship have important policy implications regarding especially on Turkish small and medium sized enterprises.
