Item Open Access Filtering characteristics of hybrid integrated polymer and compound semiconductor waveguides(IEEE, 2002) Ozturk, C.; Huntington, A.; Aydınlı, Atilla; Byun, Y.T.; Dagli, N.This paper reports a study on a compact filter fabricated using hybrid integration of compound semiconductors and polymers. A GaAs epilayer is glued onto a polymer channel waveguide forming a highly asymmetrical directional coupler. This approach results in a narrow band filter due to very different dispersion characteristics of the compound semiconductor and the polymer materials. Furthermore, fiber coupling loss has been significantly reduced, since the input and output coupling is done through the polymer waveguide. Filtering characteristics can be engineered by changing the thickness and the length of the semiconductor epilayer. This can be done precisely using etch stop layers and noncritical lithography. The spectral response of such a filter can also be tuned electronically either using the electro-optic properties of the compound semiconductor or the thermo-optic properties of the polymer.Item Open Access Ku-band substrate integrated waveguide bandpass filter design using mechanical tuning(2019-01) Biçer, AnılSubstrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filters are widely used due to their easy fabrication techniques and relatively high quality factor. In microwave frequencies, manufacturing tolerances become comparable with wavelength and affect filter performance. Tuning resonator center frequencies and couplings between resonators allow correcting the errors that are caused by imperfections. An iris bandpass filter is designed in Ku-band using coupling matrix approach which relates mathematical coupling values to physical dimensions. SIW tuning is usually done by adding varactors to the circuit. This introduces nonlinearities which may be undesirable while also requiring external control voltages. A mechanical tuning method for SIW, similar to tuning screws that are used in waveguide filters, is analyzed for resonators and couplings. It is modified by using small surface mount resistors to achieve a more compact structure. Tuning mechanisms are inserted to designed filter and fabricated on a low loss substrate. Time domain method for tuning coupled filters is introduced as a tuning algorithm. Using mechanical tuners, SIW filter is tuned to desired filter performance.
