Item Open Access Bandwidth, power and noise considerations in airborne cMUTs(IEEE, 2009-09) Şenlik, Muhammed N.; Olcum, Selim; Köymen, Hayrettin; Atalar, AbdullahCapacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (cMUTs) offer wider bandwidth in air due to their low mechanical impedances. The impedance mismatch between the air and transducer decreases with the smaller device dimensions increasing the bandwidth at the expense of the degradation in the transmit power and the receive sensitivity. In this work, the bandwidth of cMUT is optimized by increasing its radiation resistance. This is done by properly choosing the size of cMUT membranes and their placement within an array. This selection not only brings an improvement in the transmitted power when it is used as a transmitter, but also improves the noise figure when it is used as a receiver. A further improvement in the noise figure is possible when the cells are clustered and connected to separate receivers. ©2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Convexity properties of outage probability under Rayleigh fading(IEEE, 2012) Dülek, Berkan; Vanlı, N. Denizcan; Gezici, SinanIn this paper, convexity properties of outage probability are investigated under Rayleigh fading for an average power-constrained communications system that employs maximal-ratio combining (MRC) at the receiver. By studying the first and second order derivatives of the outage probability with respect to the transmitted signal power, it is found out that the outage probability is a monotonically decreasing function with a single inflection point. This observation suggests the possibility of improving the outage performance via on-off type power randomization/sharing under stringent average transmit power constraints. It is shown that the results can also be extended to the selection combining (SC) technique in a straightforward manner. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the theoretical results. © 2012 IEEE.Item Open Access Optimal signaling and detector design for power constrained on-off keying systems in Neyman-Pearson framework(IEEE, 2011) Dulek, Berkan; Gezici, SinanOptimal stochastic signaling and detector design are studied for power constrained on-off keying systems in the presence of additive multimodal channel noise under the Neyman-Pearson (NP) framework. The problem of jointly designing the signaling scheme and the decision rule is addressed in order to maximize the probability of detection without violating the constraints on the probability of false alarm and the average transmit power. Based on a theoretical analysis, it is shown that the optimal solution can be obtained by employing randomization between at most two signal values for the on-signal (symbol 1) and using the corresponding NP-type likelihood ratio test at the receiver. As a result, the optimal parameters can be computed over a significantly reduced optimization space instead of an infinite set of functions using global optimization techniques. Finally, a detection example is provided to illustrate how stochastic signaling can help improve detection performance over various optimal and sub-optimal signaling schemes. © 2011 IEEE.
