Item Open Access About the artistic and performing features of violin works of Gara Garayev(2019-05) Ganioğlu, CeylaGarayev’s unique talents of music opened a new page in Azerbaijan’s music of 20th century. He adapted an untypical way of making music in which he was able to combine the traditional and the modern type. There are several substances that were brought in music of Azerbaijan by Garayev such as new themes, new images, and new means of composing. He achieved success not only in the areas of the national ballet, choral, and chamber music but also panned out well considering sonata for violin and piano and the violin concerto. These works represents main aspects and characteristics of Garayev’s music like implementation of national traditions while applying new methods of the 20th century, specifically neo-classicism and serial technique. In both sonata for violin and piano and the violin concerto, he reflects a perspective of synthesis of the two musical systems that are the Eastern and the Western. Hidden features of the past reveal while the means of modern music are observable in sonata for violin and piano. That is why, one can claim that Azerbaijani music was enriched by Garavey through his unusual implementations of new modern techniques. The work is shaped by some common features which provides an opportunity to unite all its parts internally in order to create true unity. Individual uniqueness of harmonic language, great quality of linear motions, and polyphonic forms are all used featly by the composer. Hence, while one senses the qualities and characteristics of the national musical language, s/he is able to experience classical and contemporary music in this work. Gara Garayev carries the outputs of the past and conceives an innovative synthesis where those outputs meet present techniques. This synthesis symbolizes the national musical thought with mostly Western patterns of genres and forms. Thus, with his high unmatched genre, in which esthetical principles, rules of traditional, and aspects of modern music such as twelve-tone system exist, Azerbaijan’s music was enriched and transported into a new level.Item Restricted Boyoz ve Alsancak Dostlar Fırını'nın tarihi(Bilkent University, 2019) Arıer, Selin; Oral, Arya; Bilen, Ece; Arsan, Yaren; Külahlı, Elif SuBoyoz, İzmir bölgesinde meşhur ve sıklıkla tüketilen bir hamur işi olmakla birlikte Sefarad Yahudilerine dayanan tarihsel bir geçmişe de sahiptir. Alsancak Dostlar Fırınının kurucusu Mustafa Akar ve onun ölümünden sonra işletmeyi yeniden canlandıran kızı Berrinm Akar Rasuli de boyozun İzmir’de ünlenmesine ve yayılmasına önemli katkılar sağlamıştır. Son yıllarda da meşhur bir yiyecek olarak boyozun, İspanya’daki Musevilerden başlayarak İzmir’e ulaşmasını sağlayan süreç farklı alt başlıklarda incelendi. Öncelikle boyozun genel tanımı, kelimenin kökeni, yapılışı ve temel özelliklerinden bahsedildikten sonra Türkiye’ye geliş süreci ve hangi kültürlere dahil olduğu yazıldı. Ardından yakın tarihte boyozu üne kavuşturan ve Alsancak Dostlar Fırınının kurucusu olan Mustafa Akar’ın hayatı ve fırını tarihi anlatıldı. Mustafa Akar’ın ölümünden sonra işletmeyi devralan ve canlandıran kızı Berrin Akar Rasuli’nin yaşadığı süreç, kendi kişisel hayatı ve fırının bugüne kadar geçirdiğ süreçlerden bahsedildi. Boyozun etkileri ve nasıl İzmir’e özgü bir lezzet olduğunun üzerinde duruldu.Item Restricted Coffeehouses in Late Ottoman Istanbul from the perspectıve of European travellers(Bilkent University, 2021) Agha, Nafisa; Ahmed, Dima Hazem Ahmed; Faiz, Hassan İmran; Gökmen, Denizhan; Pitafi, MarviThis research paper aims to discuss the development of the Ottoman coffeehouse in the late Ottoman Empire in conjunction with the socio-political role it played during that time period. The birth of the Ottoman coffeehouse can be traced all the way back to the early 16th century whereby coffee was brought to Istanbul by a handful of traders. Since then, coffeehouses developed into something larger than a mere source of recreation. Instead, they aimed to provide avenues for political debate and the expression of art. People from all walks of life congregated at these coffeehouses, which further developed their presence as a modern-day public sphere. As such, this paper explicates the development of the Ottoman coffeehouse with regards to their socio-cultural and political function with an added focus on the perspective of European travellers who frequented these establishments.Item Restricted Memnune Birkan: A vital contributor to tezhip art(Bilkent University, 2020) Paryanı, Soha Saleem; Nasırlı, Jale; Bhatıa, Manmohan; Huseynlı, Govhar; Alrasheed, TabanThis research paper seeks to understand the work and life of Memnune Birkan, one of the most influential Tezhip artists of Turkey. Analysis of her work as a traditional Tezhip artist will enable us to capture the true essence of Tezhip art in both today's world and in a time when she had just started learning it. Her contribution to help this art form of illumination prosper and her overall significance is to be examined and highlighted as well in the paper. It will make the comprehension of not just Tezhip art, but other art and artists as well, much easier and would serve as a relevant source to provide cognizance on the subject to interested audiences.
