Item Open Access The choice of monetary policy tool(s) and relative price variability: evidence from Turkey(A N S I Network, 2009) Berument, Hakan; Sahin, A.; Saracoglu, B.The aim of this study is to assess any regularity relative price dispersion for the effect of monetary policy tool selection. Central banks use tools such as interbank rate and exchange rate when pursuing their (monetary) policies. The selected tools affect economic variables differently. By using Turkish monthly data for the 1988:2-2008:2 period, this study suggests that pure policies (such as interbank rate only or exchange rate only) increase relative price variability more than mixed policies, where the monetary authorities use the above tools simultaneously. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.Item Open Access Feature-based rationale management system for supporting software architecture adaptation(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd., 2012) Tekinerdogan, B.; Sozer, H.; Aksit, M.Each software architecture design is the result of a broad set of design decisions and their justifications, that is, the design rationale. Capturing the design rationale is important for a variety of reasons such as enhancing communication, reuse and maintenance. Unfortunately, it appears that there is still a lack of appropriate methods and tools for effectively capturing and managing the architecture design rationale. In this paper we present a feature-based rationale management approach and the corresponding tool environment ArchiRationale for supporting software architecture adaptation. The approach takes as input an existing architecture and captures the design rationale for adapting the architecture for a given quality concern. For this we define a feature model that includes the possible set of architectural tactics to realize the quality concern. The presented approach captures the rationale for deciding on feature selections and for selecting the corresponding architecture design alternatives. ArchiRationale customizes and integrates the Eclipse plugin tools XFeature, ArchStudio and XQuery to provide tool support for capturing, storing and accessing the design rationale. We illustrate the approach for adapting a software architecture for fault tolerance. © 2012 World Scientific Publishing Company.Item Open Access MaterialVis: material visualization tool using direct volume and surface rendering techniques(Elsevier Inc., 2014) Okuyan, E.; Güdükbay, Uğur; Bulutay, C.; Heinig, Karl-HeinzVisualization of the materials is an indispensable part of their structural analysis. We developed a visualization tool for amorphous as well as crystalline structures, called MaterialVis. Unlike the existing tools, MaterialVis represents material structures as a volume and a surface manifold, in addition to plain atomic coordinates. Both amorphous and crystalline structures exhibit topological features as well as various defects. MaterialVis provides a wide range of functionality to visualize such topological structures and crystal defects interactively. Direct volume rendering techniques are used to visualize the volumetric features of materials, such as crystal defects, which are responsible for the distinct fingerprints of a specific sample. In addition, the tool provides surface visualization to extract hidden topological features within the material. Together with the rich set of parameters and options to control the visualization, MaterialVis allows users to visualize various aspects of materials very efficiently as generated by modern analytical techniques such as the Atom Probe Tomography.Item Open Access Mathematical and numerical modeling of the effect of input-parameters on the flushing efficiency of plasma channel in EDM process(Elsevier Ltd, 2013) Shabgard, M.; Ahmadi, R.; Seyedzavvar, M.; Oliaei, S.N.B.In the present study, the temperature distribution on the surface of workpiece and tool during a single discharge in the electrical discharge machining process has been simulated using ABAQUS code finite element software. The temperature dependency of material properties and the expanding of plasma channel radius with time have been employed in the simulation stage. The profile of temperature distribution has been utilized to calculate the dimensions of discharge crater. Based on the results of FEM and the experimental observations, a numerical analysis has been developed assessing the contribution of input-parameters on the efficiency of plasma channel in removing the molten material from molten puddles on the surfaces of workpiece and tool at the end of each discharge. The results show that the increase in the pulse current and pulse on-time have converse effects on the plasma flushing efficiency, as it increases by the prior one and decreases by the latter one. Later, the introduced formulas for plasma flushing efficiency based on regression model were utilized to predict the cardinal parameter of recast layer thickness on the electrodes which demands expensive empirical tests to be obtained. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Item Open Access S-IDE: a tool framework for optimizing deployment architecture of High Level Architecture based simulation systems(2013) Çelik, T.; Tekinerdogan, B.One of the important problems in High Level Architecture (HLA) based distributed simulation systems is the allocation of the different simulation modules to the available physical resources. Usually, the deployment of the simulation modules to the physical resources can be done in many different ways, and each deployment alternative will have a different impact on the performance. Although different algorithmic solutions have been provided to optimize the allocation with respect to the performance, the problem has not been explicitly tackled from an architecture design perspective. Moreover, for optimizing the deployment of the simulation system, tool support is largely missing. In this paper we propose a method for automatically deriving deployment alternatives for HLA based distributed simulation systems. The method extends the IEEE Recommended Practice for High Level Architecture Federation Development and Execution Process by providing an approach for optimizing the allocation at the design level. The method is realized by the tool framework, S-IDE (Simulation-IDE) that we have developed to provide an integrated development environment for deriving a feasible deployment alternative based on the simulation system and the available physical resources at the design phase. The method and the tool support have been validated using a case study for the development of a traffic simulation system. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.Item Open Access Scheduling with tool changes to minimize total completion time: a study of heuristics and their performance(John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2003) Aktürk, M. S.; Ghosh, J. B.; Güneş, E. D.The machine scheduling literature does not consider the issue of tool change. The parallel literature on tool management addresses this issue but assumes that the change is due only to part mix. In practice, however, a tool change is caused most frequently by tool wear. That is why we consider here the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a single CNC machine where the cutting tool is subject to wear; our objective is to minimize the total completion time. We first describe the problem and discuss its peculiarities. After briefly reviewing available theoretical results, we then go on to provide a mixed 0–1 linear programming model for the exact solution of the problem; this is useful in solving problem instances with up to 20 jobs and has been used in our computational study. As our main contribution, we next propose a number of heuristic algorithms based on simple dispatch rules and generic search. We then discuss the results of a computational study where the performance of the various heuristics is tested; we note that the well-known SPT rule remains good when the tool change time is small but deteriorates as this time increases and further that the proposed algorithms promise significant improvement over the SPT rule.Item Open Access Software architecture tool demonstrations(ACM, 2012) Muccini H.; Tekinerdoğan, BekirIn this paper, we describe the short summary of the tool demonstrations session at WICSA/ECSA 2012.
