Item Open Access A comparative analysis of selected biology textbooks used in Turkey, focusing on genetics chapters and their inclusion of nature of science(2021-10) Boyacıoğlu, ZeynepTextbooks are used widely in classrooms all around the world. Some teachers treat their textbooks as the curriculum and plan their entire teaching according to the textbook. Hence, textbooks should meet the teaching needs of the teachers, while at the same time meeting the learning needs of students. This study aims to compare the genetics-related chapters of four selected biology textbooks widely used in Turkish classrooms: two used by the Ministry of Education (MoNE) and two used for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The textbooks were evaluated according to the criteria published by Turkish Board of Education (TTKB). In addition, the online materials provided with the textbooks and introduction of Nature of Science (NoS) in these textbooks were investigated. The analysis was done on genetics-related chapters, using qualitative content analysis for data collection. The findings of the study showed that all four of the textbooks generally complied with the criteria, however there were some discrepancies. There were some scientific mistakes in both IBDP textbooks. Similarly, there were mistakes in the online materials provided by MoNE textbooks. Finally, the introduction of NoS was analyzed using a modified framework. The findings showed that none of the textbooks had balanced representation of NoS. Overall, none of the textbooks fully complied with the criteria. Thus, teachers and students should be mindful of the findings of this study when using these textbooks for their teaching and learning.Item Open Access A comparative analysis of two English language textbooks written for academic and general purposes(2019-05) Yılmaz, PınarThe purpose of this study to investigate the possible distinct characteristics of two English language textbooks: one written for English for general purposes (EGP) and one written for English for academic purposes (EAP) purposes using content analysis approach. To this end, a textbook evaluation scheme was used to evaluate chosen two textbooks. Two textbooks under analysis were compared in terms of their content, organization, types of texts, exercises, aims and objectives, levels, skills, topics, situations, target learners, time required, components and number and length of units. These textbooks were found to be different in most of the areas in the evaluation scheme used for analysis.Item Open Access Exploring communicative languange teaching in a grade 9 nationwide textbook: New bridge to success(2015) Ander, TuğbaCommunicative language teaching (CLT) has been widely influential in English language teaching for the last two decades. Therefore, many materials including textbooks have been designed considered the principles of communicative language teaching, and have been analysed to see how, or if, they are compatible with communicative language teaching. In the context of Turkey, several high school textbooks have been designed, and have undergone such analysis but there is no prior example of a study investigating the content of New Bridge to Success (NBS) in detail with respect to CLT. This study aims to explore the extent to which New Bridge to Success Elementary for Anatolian High Schools is in keeping with the principles of CLT. To this end, the study used content analysis to examine the tasks given in each section of the textbook, and to identify the sub-skills the textbook intends to focus on.
