Item Open Access The 1912 Galata Bridge as a site of collective memory(2002) Şumnu, UmutThis work looks at the 1912 Galata Bridge as a case study and attempts to examine it as a dual construction in two senses: space and memory. Acknowledging that space and memory mutually construct each other, this thesis explains each term in general but also elucidates the relationship between perception and remembrance of space by reading the materiality of the 1912 Galata Bridge. In that respect, changing meanings attributed to space over time are analysed lead us to recognise two different ways of conceiving space named as 'spaceness' and 'placeness'. This dual existence is conductive to raising questions about perception of the 1912 Galata Bridge in two layers. Taken separately, its function of conveyance and the property of inhabitation lead us to read 'spaceness' and 'placeness' that also correspond to two ways of remembering it. Its 'spaceness' is perceived by the gaze and remembered through looking at its images, its 'placeness, on the other hand, is experienced by the body and recollected through reading texts that describe the actual engagement. Hence, 'spaceness' and 'placeness', gaze and body, image and text are correspondingly related with each other by the agency of the 1912 Galata Bridge as situated in collective memory.Item Open Access The concept of literary genre(sdvig Press, 2018) Olsen, Stein HaugomGenre theory, as it has developed in the last forty years, hasmade use of what I call a constitutive concept of genre, a concept that hasbuilt into it the assumption that genre plays a central epistemic role in theinterpretation of verbal discourse. In this paper I argue that there aretheoretical problems with such a concept that have not been recognizedand that make it unsuitable as a critical instrument in literary history andliterary studies. A fruitful concept of literary genre needs to be pragmaticwith only a heuristic and not an epistemic function. As an example, thearticle looks at the criticism produced in connection with the picaresquenovel and in particular at the account given of the origin of the genre, anaccount that could not have been given if one had employed a constitutiveconcept of genreItem Open Access The dynamic interaction between advertising and popular culture : a case study on Ixir TV commercials(2006) Seçmeer, BaharIn the scope of the thesis, the “advertising” concept--rather than its economic dimension-- is taken as a matter of culture under the form of popular culture, serving as a repository for social and cultural data. How the dynamic interaction and the mutually exclusive culture generation among advertising and popular culture takes place is examined upon the latest commercials for validity and up to datedness. Furthermore, İxir TV commercials, because of their periodical importance, rich content and popularity are chosen as the sample case for further investigations. Item Open Access Text and action / lament as performance and pragmatics(2006) Terzioğlu, ÖyküLament, is the expression of grief and sorrow within the frame of certain oral and performative conventions upon which the society agrees in advance. As it is made manifest by its definition, lament is a form of social expression apt to be analyzed in terms of the "performance" notion put forward by Gilbert Lewis. In this text, it will be discussed to what extent the compilations of lament make feasible an accurate representation of this form of social expression within the social context in which it is produced. Furthermore, Dan Ben Amos' critique of folkloric compilations will be regarded taking into consideration the notions of "text", "texture" and "context" as introduced by Alan Dundes and the solutions that a relatively new domain of linguistics, namely pragmatics has to offer in the surmounting of the issues related to the accuracy of representation brought about by lament compilations.Item Open Access Text, image, graphics editor(1988) Coşar, AhmetThe editor proposed in this study can manipulate textual, graphics and image data in a unified way. Each data type can be edited individually or dependencies can be set up between various data items so that modifying one might propagate its effects on others. The system is developed by using new software tools and techniques such as object oriented programming, multi window workstations running with event selection principles and iconic interfacing. Facilities for data protection, such as journaling are provided. Data storage and editing principles are handled within guidelines of well established standards. However, where such definitions fall short, proposals for new techniques are made especially with respect to relation sets binding various data types
