Item Open Access Effective electron-electron interactions and magnetic phase transition in a two-dimensional electron liquid(Elsevier B.V., 2007) Asgari, R.; Esmailian, A.; Tanatar, BilalWe investigate the spin-dependent effective electron-electron interactions in a uniform system of two-dimensional electrons to understand the spontaneous magnetization expected to occur at very low density. For this purpose, we adopt the Kukkonen-Overhauser form for the effective interactions which are built by accurately determined local-field factors describing the charge and spin fluctuations. The critical behavior of the effective interaction for parallel spin electrons allows us to quantitatively locate the transition to the ferromagnetic state at rs ≈ 27. When the finite width effects are approximately taken into account the transition occurs at rs ≈ 30 in agreement with recent quantum Monte Carlo calculations.Item Open Access Nuclear spin squeezing via electric quadrupole interaction(American Physical Society, 2016) Korkmaz, Y. A.; Bulutay, C.Control over nuclear-spin fluctuations is essential for processes that rely on preserving the quantum state of an embedded system. For this purpose, squeezing is a viable alternative, so far that has not been properly exploited for the nuclear spins. Of particular relevance in solids is the electric quadrupole interaction (QI), which operates on nuclei having spin higher than 1/2. In its general form, QI involves an electric-field gradient (EFG) biaxiality term. Here, we show that as this EFG biaxiality increases, it enables continuous tuning of single-particle squeezing from the one-axis twisting to the two-axis countertwisting limits. A detailed analysis of QI squeezing is provided, exhibiting the intricate consequences of EFG biaxiality. The initial states over the Bloch sphere are mapped out to identify those favorable for fast initial squeezing, or for prolonged squeezings. Furthermore, the evolution of squeezing in the presence of a phase-damping channel and an external magnetic field are investigated. We observe that dephasing drives toward an antisqueezed terminal state, the degree of which increases with the spin angular momentum. Finally, QI squeezing in the limiting case of a two-dimensional EFG with a perpendicular magnetic field is discussed, which is of importance for two-dimensional materials, and the associated beat patterns in squeezing are revealed. © 2016 American Physical Society.Item Open Access Spinor boson droplets stabilized by spin fluctuations(American Physical Society, 2022-04-13) Yoğurt, T. A.; Keleş, A.; Oktel, Mehmet ÖzgürSelf-trapped droplets stabilized by quantum fluctuations have been experimentally realized in dipolar gases and binary boson mixtures. In this paper, we propose spinor Bose gases as another candidate for droplet formation. For spin-1 gas, we find that spin fluctuations give a dilute but self-trapped state for two different order parameters where the mean-field picture predicts collapse. A polar droplet phase can be stabilized by spin fluctuations for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin-dependent coupling. An antiferromagnetic droplet phase can be stabilized similarly with a negative quadratic Zeeman shift. Furthermore, the beyond mean-field energy of the system depends on the quadratic Zeeman coupling, which provides a mechanism to tune the droplet formation and its density. We discuss the parameters necessary for the experimental realization of such spinor droplets.Item Open Access Wavelet resolved coherence beating in the Overhauser field of a thermal nuclear spin ensemble(American Physical Society, 2022-02-14) Güldeste, Ekrem Taha; Bulutay, CeyhunThis work introduces the so-called synchrosqueezed wavelet transform, to shed light on the dipolar fluctuations of a thermal ensemble of nuclear spins in a diamond crystal structure, hyperfine-coupled to a central spin. The raw time series of the nuclear spin bath coherent dynamics is acquired through the two-point correlation function computed using the cluster correlation expansion method. The dynamics can be conveniently analyzed according to zero-, single-, and double-quantum transitions derived from the dipolar pairwise spin flips. We show that in the early-time behavior when the coherence is preserved in the spin ensemble, the Overhauser field fluctuations are modulated by dipole-dipole-induced small inhomogeneous detunings of nearly resonant transitions within the bath. The resulting beating extending over relatively longer time intervals is featured on the scalograms where both temporal and spectral behaviors of nuclear spin noise are unveiled simultaneously. Moreover, a second kind of beating that affects faster dynamics is readily discernible, originating from the inhomogeneous spread of the hyperfine coupling of each nucleus with the central spin. Additionally, any quadrupolar nuclei within the bath imprint as beating residing in the zero-quantum channel. The nuclear spin environment can be directionally probed by orienting the hyperfine axis. Thereby, crucial spatial information about the closely separated spin clusters surrounding the central spin are accessible. Thus, a wavelet-based postprocessing can facilitate the identification of proximal nuclear spins as revealed by their unique beating patterns on the scalograms. Finally, when these features are overwhelmed by either weakly or strongly coupled classical noise sources, we demonstrate the efficacy of thresholding techniques in the wavelet domain in denoising contaminated scalograms.
