K.; Yucel, D.; Celiker, G.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanNanocomposites that incorporate TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles separately in three-dimensional solgel matrices through full chemical integration are prepared to perform highly efficient photocatalytic activities for applications of environmental decontamination. Spectral responses of photocatalytic TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles exposed to UV activation for self-cleaning process were obtained as also their optical relative spectral efficiency curves from 270 to 370 nm in the UV regime. Our investigations of the optimal conditions to increase their spectral photocatalytic efficiencies resulted in remarkably high levels of optical recovery and efficiency.Item Open Access High optical efficiency of ZnO nanoparticles(IEEE, 2007) Tek, Sümeyra; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Yucel, D.; Celiker G.We develop optically efficient photocatalytic ZnO nanoparticles that we chemically embed and well disperse into host PVAc thin films and experimentally demonstrate the highest optical efficiency of ∼70% in ZnO nanoparticle films, with increasing optical spectral efficiency as the excitation wavelength is swept from 370 nm to 290 nm. ©2007 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access A low-complexity transmission and scheduling scheme for wimax systems with base station cooperation(SpringerOpen, 2010) Aktas, D.; Tokel, T. B.This paper considers base station cooperation as an interference management technique for the downlink of a WiMAX network (IEEE 802.16 standard) with frequency reuse factor of 1. A low-complexity cooperative transmission and scheduling scheme is proposed that requires limited feedback from the users and limited information exchange between the base stations. The proposed scheme requires minor modifications to the legacy IEEE 802.16e systems. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with noncooperative schemes with similar complexity through computer simulations. Results demonstrate that base station cooperation provides an attractive solution for mitigating the cochannel interference and increases the system spectral efficiency compared to traditional cellular architectures based on frequency reuse.Item Open Access A novel measurement-based approach for modeling and computing interference factors for wireless channels(SpringerOpen, 2013) Ulucinar, A. R.; Korpeoglu, I.; Karasan, E.Wireless communication technologies divide their available spectrum into pre-defined channels. Some wireless technologies, such as the IEEE 802.11b/g, define their channels in such a way that adjacent channels share the spectrum. When two distinct channels share some part of their spectrum, simultaneous transmissions on these channels cause what is k own as the adjacent channel interference. For problems that consider adjacent channel interference, such as the channel assignment problem for multi-channel wireless mesh networks, we need a model that quantitatively describes adjacent channel interference. The interference factor is a concept defined to quantify the amount of the overlap, hence the interference, between two wireless channels. Analytical and experimental methods have been proposed in the literature to define the interference factors among channels of a wireless technology. In this article, we propose a physical-layer-measurement-based, technology-independent and generic approach that is capable of determining interference factors between the channels of a wireless technology and also between the channels of two different wireless technologies, such as IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4. We also report our measurement results for interference factors among 802.11b DSSS channels and between 802.15.4 and 802.11b channels. Our results show that our approach is practical, accurate and generic enough to compute the interference factors of radio channels belonging to various wireless communication technologies. © 2013 Ulucinar et al.Item Open Access A verifiable secret sharing scheme based on the chinese remainder theorem(Springer, 2008-12) Kaya, Kamer; Selçuk, Ali AydınIn this paper, we investigate how to achieve verifiable secret sharing (VSS) schemes by using the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT). We first show that two schemes proposed earlier are not secure by an attack where the dealer is able to distribute inconsistent shares to the users. Then we propose a new VSS scheme based on the CRT and prove its security. Using the proposed VSS scheme, we develop a joint random secret sharing (JRSS) protocol, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first JRSS protocol based on the CRT. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
