Item Open Access Effects of adopting inflation targeting regimes on inflation variability(Elsevier BV, 2007) Berument, Hakan; Yuksel, E.This paper investigates whether inflation-targeting programs have altered the pattern of inflation and its variability for five developed countries and four emerging economies implementing inflation-targeting programs. A GARCH specification is used to model inflation variability, which accounts for public perception of the future levels of inflation variability-conditional variance. We could not find lower conditional inflation expectations except for Australia, Chile and Sweden under various specifications. Moreover, the conditional variance decreases only for Chile and the UK. Therefore, the empirical support for the lower inflation and its variability for the inflation targeting regimes is limited. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. N.; Yardımcı, Y.The fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm has been used in a variety of applications in signal and image processing. In this article, a simple procedure for designing finite-extent impulse response (FIR) discrete-time filters using the FFT algorithm is described. The zero-phase (or linear phase) FIR filter design problem is formulated to alternately satisfy the frequency domain constraints on the magnitude response bounds and time domain constraints on the impulse response support. The design scheme is iterative in which each iteration requires two FFT computations. The resultant filter is an equiripple approximation to the desired frequency response. The main advantage of the FFT-based design method is its implementational simplicity and versatility. Furthermore, the way the algorithm works is intuitive and any additional constraint can be incorporated in the iterations, as long as the convexity property of the overall operations is preserved. In one-dimensional cases, the most widely used equiripple FIR filter design algorithm is the Parks-McClellan algorithm (1972). This algorithm is based on linear programming, and it is computationally efficient. However, it cannot be generalized to higher dimensions. Extension of our design method to higher dimensions is straightforward. In this case two multidimensional FFT computations are needed in each iteration.Item Open Access An experiment to observe the impact of UML diagrams on the effectiveness of software requirements inspections(IEEE, 2009) Albayrak, ÖzlemSoftware inspections aim to find defects early in the development process and studies have found them to be effective. However, there is almost no data available regarding the impact of UML diagram utilization in software requirements specification documents on inspection effectiveness. This paper addresses this issue by investigating whether inclusion of UML diagrams impacts the effectiveness of requirements inspection. We conducted an experiment in an academic environment with 35 subjects to empirically investigate the impact of UML diagram inclusion on requirements inspections' effectiveness and the number of reported defects. The results show that including UML diagrams in requirements specification document significantly impacts the number of reported defects, and there is no significant impact on the effectiveness of individual i nspections. © 2009 IEEE.Item Open Access PSAR: Power-source-aware routing in ZigBee networks(2012) Tekkalmaz, M.; Korpeoglu I.ZigBee is a recent wireless networking technology built on IEEE 802.15.4 standard and designed especially for low-data rate and low-duty cycle applications such as home and building automation and sensor networks. One of the primary goals of ZigBee is low power consumption and therefore long-living networks. Despite this goal, current network formation and routing protocols described in the ZigBee specification do not fully address power consumption issues. In this work, we propose a distributed routing algorithm to reduce power consumption of battery-powered devices by routing the communication through mains-powered devices whenever possible and consequently increasing the overall network lifetime. The proposed algorithm works on tree topologies supported by ZigBee and requires only minor modifications to the current specification. Our ns-2 simulation results showed that the algorithm is able to reduce the power consumption of battery-powered devices significantly with minimal communication overhead. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2012.Item Open Access Runtime verification of component-based embedded software(Springer, 2011-09) Sözer, Hasan; Hofmann, C.; Tekinerdoğan, Bedir; Akşit, M.To deal with increasing size and complexity, component-based software development has been employed in embedded systems. Due to several faults, components can make wrong assumptions about the working mode of the system and the working modes of the other components. To detect mode inconsistencies at runtime, we propose a "lightweight" error detection mechanism, which can be integrated with component-based embedded systems. We define links among three levels of abstractions: the runtime behavior of components, the working mode specifications of components and the specification of the working modes of the system. This allows us to detect the user observable runtime errors. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated by implementing a software monitor integrated into a TV system. © 2012 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
