Item Open Access Approximate computation of DFT without performing any multiplications: application to radar signal processing(IEEE, 2014) Arslan, Musa Tunç; Bozkurt, Alican; Sevimli, Rasim Akın; Akbaş, Cem Emre; Çetin, A. EnisIn many radar problems it is not necessary to compute the ambiguity function in a perfect manner. In this article a new multiplication free algorithm for approximate computation of the ambiguity function is introduced. All multiplications (a × b) in the ambiguity function are replaced by an operator which computes sign(a × b)(a + b). The new transform is especially useful when the signal processing algorithm requires correlations. Ambiguity function in radar signal processing requires high number of correlations and DFT computations. This new additive operator enables an approximate computation of the ambiguity function without requiring any multiplications. Simulation examples involving passive radars are presented.Item Open Access L1 norm based multiplication-free cosine similarity measures for big data analysis(IEEE, 2014-11) Akbaş, Cem Emre; Bozkurt, Alican; Arslan, Musa Tunç; Aslanoğlu, Hüseyin; Çetin, A. EnisThe cosine similarity measure is widely used in big data analysis to compare vectors. In this article a new set of vector similarity measures are proposed. New vector similarity measures are based on a multiplication-free operator which requires only additions and sign operations. A vector 'product' using the multiplication-free operator is also defined. The new vector product induces the ℓ1-norm. As a result, new cosine measure-like similarity measures are normalized by the ℓ1-norms of the vectors. They can be computed using the MapReduce framework. Simulation examples are presented. © 2014 IEEE.Item Open Access Linear algebraic analysis of fractional Fourier domain interpolation(IEEE, 2009) Öktem, Figen S.; Özaktaş, Haldun M.In this work, we present a novel linear algebraic approach to certain signal interpolation problems involving the fractional Fourier transform. These problems arise in wave propagation, but the proposed approach to these can also be applicable to other areas. We see this interpolation problem as the problem of determining the unknown signal values from the given samples within some tolerable error. We formulate the problem as a linear system of equations and use the condition number as a measure of redundant information in given samples. By analyzing the effect of the number of known samples and their distributions on the condition number with simulation examples, we aim to investigate the redundancy and information relations between the given data.Item Open Access Linear/nonlinear adaptive polyphase subband decomposition structures for image compression(IEEE, 1998-05) Gerek, Ömer N.; Çetin, A. EnisSubband decomposition techniques have been extensively used for data coding and analysis. In most filter banks, the goal is to obtain subsampled signals corresponding to different spectral bands of the original data. However, this approach leads to various artifacts in images containing text, subtitles, or sharp edges. In this paper, adaptive filter banks with perfect reconstruction property are presented for such images. The filters of the decomposition structure vary according to the nature of the signal. This leads to higher compression ratios for images containing subtitles compared to fixed filter banks. Simulation examples are presented.Item Open Access Local pinning of networks of multi-agent systems with transmission and pinning delays(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2016) Lu, W.; Atay, F. M.We study the stability of networks of multi-agent systems with local pinning strategies and two types of time delays, namely the transmission delay in the network and the pinning delay of the controllers. Sufficient conditions for stability are derived under specific scenarios by computing or estimating the dominant eigenvalue of the characteristic equation. In addition, controlling the network by pinning a single node is studied. Moreover, perturbation methods are employed to derive conditions in the limit of small and large pinning strengths. Numerical algorithms are proposed to verify stability, and simulation examples are presented to confirm the efficiency of analytic results. 2015 IEEE.
