Item Open Access Mimesis and sociality : a reading of the question of literature in Deleuze and Derrida(2008) Koyuncu, EmreThe aim of this study is to discuss the significance of Platonic mimesis in the new forms of relationality and sociality proposed in the philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. For a better understanding of this relationship, this thesis makes a detour through the question of literature in the thoughts of these thinkers. In this view, it is argued that the sociality proposed by Deleuze and Derrida challenge the traditional premises of society through the sorcery of becoming and wizardry of pharmakos respectively, criticizing the idealization of a model for citizenship and the originarization of sociality by way of a linear passage between the natural and the political.Item Open Access Representation(s) of Topkapı Palace(2004) Seles, EmreThis thesis is based on a critical analysis of the problem of representation based on Platonic Idealism. Historically, this problem has been closely tied to the problematic opposition between notions of original and copy. In this study the assumptions behind this binary opposition and the existence of a reality that is accessible other than by its own representations are deconstructed. The notion of simulacrum is introduced to counter the original/copy argument in relation to the contemporary culture of consumerism. Within this theoretical framework the Topkapi Palace Hotel in Antalya is taken as a case study. Representations of Topkapi Palace preceding the hotel are analyzed including Ottoman miniatures, Orientalist paintings/gravures and the Topkapi Palace Museum. The basic premise of the thesis is that the notion of simulation destabilizes the model/copy binary which has significant repercussions in contemporary architectural discourse and practice.Item Open Access The rhetoric of Achaemenid art(2002) Asena, BurcuEmpires are like humans: they are born, they live and they die... In the middle of the sixth century B.C. a newly founded empire by the Achaemenid Dynasty began to dominate the Near East and its environment, which is known to be the treshold of civilization. The conquest of the vast territory was based on military power. However to provide the continuum of their rule Achaemenids created a new form of art, in their capital city Persepolis, which would be recognized and would imply the Achaemenid imperialistic ideology. In this thesis, the history and art history of the Achaemenid Empire was analyzed with modern data and applications in political propaganda, advertising and architecture. The analysis was mostly focused on the capital city Persepolis and its art works to reveal the parallels between the modern and the archaeological. The aim of this thesis is to discuss the unchanging nature of the events taking place in history, and human psychology throughout centuries, even millennia: after 2500 years, we see the same implications to effect people’s psyche.Item Open Access The simulacrum surfaced : a study on the nature of the image(2004) Erlevent, EvrenThis study aims at understanding the nature of the visual image through discussing the notion of 'simulacrum' within the philosophy of Plato, Baudrillard and Deleuze and trying to locate its importance within the representational system of models and copies. The notion of imitation and representation is found problematic in explaining the fascination within visual imagery and Deleuze’s term ‘becoming’ is suggested as more appropriate. It is discussed in this thesis how the simulacrum threatens and destabilizes model/copy relations of representation through its role in Deleuze’s ‘sensation.’
