Item Open Access High school science teachers' beliefs and attitudes towards the use of interactive whiteboards in education(2014) Anatürk, CerenIn recent years, the field of educational technology has rapidly developed and facilitated the integration of new generation technological tools into education. Interactive white boards (IWBs) are one of the popular technological tools which can be named as a product of this progression. In Turkey, with the scope of the FATİH (Movement of Enhancing Opportunities and Improving Technology) Project, the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) also distributed IWBs with internet connection for selected 17 pilot cities all around Turkey. This study explored high school science teachers’ beliefs and attitudes towards the use of IWBs by considering six different FATİH Project pilot high schools in Ankara. Science teachers (biology, physics and chemistry) from six of the high schools were selected and 36 teachers participated to the questionnaire out of 46. Of these, three teachers from each school were chosen by considering their questionnaire results with purposeful sampling method. The study utilized mixed-methods approaches so quantitative data (questionnaire) were complemented by qualitative data (interviews and classroom observations). The results were analyzed with descriptive statistics and qualitative data analysis methods. According to the results, teachers agreed that IWBs are teaching tools which facilitate reaching different sources and displaying them to the whole class immediately. Although teachers have positive attitudes towards the use of IWBs, it was seen that most of them do not feel comfortable while using IWBs in the classrooms. The reason for that was explained with insufficient in-service trainings by considering interview results. Moreover usage differences among science teachers (physics, chemistry and biology), common problems which are related to IWBs and contributions of IWBs to particular teaching process of the high school science teachers were indicated in following sections.Item Open Access High school students’ level of knowledge and attitudes towards the use of technology in biology classrooms(2021-01) Yalım, EcemThrough the rapid development of technology of our age more technology tools are used in the field of education. In education, the use of technology and its tools affects students’ attitudes towards lessons. Therefore, technology and its tools have been used in the education field to provide opportunities for students to have better educational environments and to improve their learning. This study aims to investigate high school students’ (N= 612, 58% female and 42% male students) level of knowledge and attitudes towards the use of technology in biology classrooms. In this quantitative study, a questionnaire was used to collect data from four different high school in Ankara province. As a result of this study, the most used technology tools in biology classrooms are video, animation and interactive white board. In terms of gender difference, it was concluded that male students’ knowledge level of technology and its tools used in biology classrooms are higher than female students. However, it was explored that female students’ attitudes are more positive than male students' attitudes in biology classrooms. Finally, there is a weak correlation between students’ technology knowledge and the program that they follow in schools. On the other hand, there is no relationship between students’ attitudes towards technology and the program that they follow. Considering the results, the present study suggests that the technology and its tools used in high school biology classrooms will be useful in informing teachers and educational program developers about students’ level of technology knowledge and attitudes towards technology.Item Restricted İzmir Atatürk Lisesi’nin tarihçesi ve mezunlarının Türkiye’ye katkıları(Bilkent University, 2020) Koyun, Baturalp; Özdemir, Begüm; Yılmaz, Ezgi; Aksoy, İnci; Güven, Rüyaİzmir Atatürk Lisesi 1888 yılında İzmir’in Konak ilçesinde kurulmuş bir lisedir. 130 yılı aşkın prestijli tarihinde ulusal ve uluslararası akademik ve sosyal başarıları, eğitim sisteminin kalitesi, fark yaratan ve ülkenin geleceğinin şekillenmesinde rol oynayan onlarca mezunu ile Türkiye’nin adını duyurmuş saygıdeğer liselerinden birisi haline gelmiştir. To what extent do schools contribute to their students' academic success? To answer these questions, we model students' preferences and obtain average valuation placed on each school. We then investigate what drives these valuations by carefully controlling for endogeneity using a set of creative instruments suggested by our model. We find that valuation is based on a school's location, its selectivity as measured by its cutoff score, value added and past performance in university entrance exams. However, cutoffs affect school valuation an order of magnitude more than does value added. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.Item Open Access Social and emotional learning research: intervention studies for supporting adolescents in Turkey(Elsevier, 2012-10) Martin, Robin AnnThis study is a systematic literature review that examines intervention research on social and emotional learning (SEL) programs in secondary schools of Turkey. Overall, 12 intervention studies were identified that had examined school programs on SEL-related topics. These topics included values development, conflict resolution, anger management, self- esteem enhancement, peer mediation, and several classroom-based interventions within subject area teaching. Findings suggest gaps in the publication of high quality research on intervention programs for supporting social and emotional learning in secondary schools of Turkey, along with inattention to how such programs influence academic achievement.
