    Dis-placed: space, settlement, and agency
    (Intellect Ltd., 2021-07-01) Batuman, Bülent
This article introduces the special issue ‘Dis-placed’. Questioning the term ‘refugee’ as an identity marker and pointing at the problematic connotations it embodies, the article explores the spatial forms of refugee experience. The knowledge of space, as produced within disciplines such as geography, urban planning, and architecture, is deployed by states to limit the movements of forced migrants across and within national borders. In response, the article calls for social/spatial justice, arguing that this can only be achieved through the blurring of the boundaries between host and refugee identities. The contributions in this special issue present investigations on different facets of the spatiality of forced migration through various disciplinary approaches and methodologies. Taken together, they underline the importance of the link between space and refugee agency in tackling forced migration.

Mass migration movements to Turkey: the cases of Turks of Bulgaria, Northern Iraqis, and Syrians
    (2018-08) Ayaşlı, Enes
This thesis analyzes the Turkish migratory responses towards three different mass migration movements, namely Turks of Bulgaria, Northern Iraqis and Syrians, to reveal similarities and differences. While doing so, it will design an analytical framework built on an existing study, explaining motives of the Turkish state responses. The thesis, by tracing the history of the given cases, will also try to demonstrate whether refuges are used as tools of Turkish Foreign Policy or not.

Representations of Syrian refugees in Turkish news media: content analysis of oppositional newspapers
    (2021-06) Gürbüzdal, Ufuk
This thesis examines the representations of Syrian refugees in online news articles broadcasted by Turkish oppositional newspapers from different ideological and political orientations. The three oppositional media outlets, Evrensel, Milli Gazete and Sözcü, each with different politico-ideological standpoints, are examined for their news content. In the study, as a reference newspaper for pro-government news media, Sabah’s news content is also scrutinized. The news content of Sabah is analyzed to politically contextualize, first and foremost, the Turkish government’s refugee policy and, then, the examined newspapers’ opposition to this policy. The time scale of content analysis is divided into two central periods. To identify the most prominent representation differences in the news articles disseminated before and after the mass settlement of Syrian refugees in Turkish cities, the reports broadcasted solely in 2011-2013 and 2016-2018 are included in the content analysis scope. For newspapers where a sufficient number of online news is publicly available and accessible, 30 news articles per newspaper per year are analyzed. In cases where it is not possible to reach 30 reports, only the accessible amount of news is analyzed.

What determines positive attitudes toward refugees and why? Comparing Türkiye and Germany in response to post-2011 forced migration crisis based on the context of value change and institutional trust
    (2024-09) Erden, Veysel Yiğit
This study aims to provide empirical evidence in exploring the determinants of creating positive attitudes toward refugees and the reason behind this by responding the question: ‘Under what conditions do communities with migration experience in refugee-receiving states become more open toward accepting more refugees, and why?’. This research seeks answers to this question by testing two hypotheses: (i) post-materialist, cooperative, inclusive and egalitarian norms within the population may serve as an effective strategy for fostering a more welcoming attitude towards refugees and mitigating xenophobic sentiments and (ii) well-functioning migration governance based on the high-level of institutional and regulatory capacity of host countries and the ability to foster institutional trust within the resident communities are anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping a positive attitude towards refugees. Even though findings obtained under this research did not produce any significant result for supporting or falsifying the first hypothesis which aims to examine the impact of change in value preferences on attitudes toward refugees, this research found that regulatory and institution of host countries and institutional trust toward them among people matter in shaping people’s attitudes toward acceptance of further refugees in a positive way.
