Item Open Access A baseball-bat-like CdTe/TiO2 nanorods-based heterojunction core–shell solar cell(Elsevier, 2013) Karaagac, H.; Parlak, M.; Aygun, L. E.; Ghaffari, M.; Bıyıklı, Necmi; Okyay, Ali KemalRutile TiO2 nanorods on fluorine-doped thin oxide glass substrates via the hydrothermal technique were synthesized and decorated with a sputtered CdTe layer to fabricate a core-shell type n-TiO2/p-CdTe solar cell. Absorbance spectrum verified the absorption contribution of both TiO2 and CdTe to the absorption process. The solar cell parameters, such as open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, fill factor and power conversion efficiency were found to be 0.34 V, 1.27 mA cm-2, 28% and 0.12%, respectively. .Item Open Access Critical role of CdSe nanoplatelets in color-converting CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals for InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes(OSA - The Optical Society, 2016) Hasanov N.; Sharma, V. K.; Martinez, P. L. H.; Tan S.T.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanHere we report CdSe nanoplatelets that are incorporated into color-converting CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals for InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes. The critical role of CdSe nanoplatelets as an exciton donor for the color conversion was experimentally investigated. The power conversion efficiency of the hybrid light-emitting diode was found to increase by 23% with the incorporation of the CdSe nanoplatelets. The performance enhancement is ascribed to efficient exciton transfer from the donor CdSe nanoplatelet quantum wells to the acceptor CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal quantum dots through Frster-type nonradiative resonance energy transfer.Item Open Access Energy-saving quality road lighting with colloidal quantum dot nanophosphors(Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2014) Erdem, T.; Kelestemur, Y.; Soran-Erdem, Z.; Ji, Y.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanHere the first photometric study of road-lighting white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) integrated with semiconductor colloidal quantum dots (QDs) is reported enabling higher luminance than conventional light sources, specifically in mesopic vision regimes essential to street lighting. Investigating over 100 million designs uncovers that quality road-lighting QD-WLEDs, with a color quality scale and color rendering index ≥85, enables 13-35% higher mesopic luminance than the sources commonly used in street lighting. Furthermore, these QD-WLEDs were shown to be electrically more efficient than conventional sources with power conversion efficiencies ≥16-29%. Considering this fact, an experimental proof-of-concept QD-WLED was demonstrated, which is the first account of QD based color conversion custom designed for street lighting applications. The obtained white LED achieved the targeted mesopic luminance levels in accordance with the road lighting standards of the USA and the UK. These results indicate that road-lighting QD-WLEDs are strongly promising for energy-saving quality road lighting. © 2014 Science Wise Publishing & De Gruyter 2014.Item Open Access Influence of gold-silica nanoparticles on the performance of small-molecule bulk heterojunction solar cells(Elsevier BV * North-Holland, 2015) Xu, X.; Kyaw, A. K. K.; Peng, B.; Xiong, Q.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Wang Y.; Wong, T. K. S.; Sun, X. W.Light trapping by gold (Au)-silica nanospheres and nanorods embedded in the active layer of small-molecule (SM) organic solar cell has been systematically compared. Nanorod significantly outperforms nanosphere because of more light scattering and higher quality factor for localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) triggered by nanorods. The optimum concentration of nanorod was characterized by charge carrier transport and morphology of the active layers. At optimum nanorod concentration, almost no change in the morphology of the active layer reveals that LSPR and scattering effects rather than the morphology are mainly responsible for the enhanced power conversion efficiency. In addition, the preliminary lifetime studies of the SM solar cells with and without Au-silica nanorods were conducted by measuring the current density-voltage characteristics over 20 days. The results show that plasmonic device with nanorods has no adverse impact on the device stabilityItem Open Access Theoretical limits of the multistacked 1-D and 2-D microstructured inorganic solar cells(SPIE, 2015-08) Yengel, Emre; Karaağaç, H.; Logeeswaran, V. J.; İslam, M. S.Recent studies in monocrystalline semiconductor solar cells are focused on mechanically stacking multiple cells from different materials to increase the power conversion efficiency. Although, the results show promising increase in the device performance, the cost remains as the main drawback. In this study, we calculated the theoretical limits of multistacked 1D and 2D microstructered inorganic monocrstalline solar cells. This system is studied for Si and Ge material pair. The results show promising improvements in the surface reflection due to enhanced light trapping caused by photon-microstructures interactions. The theoretical results are also supported with surface reflection and angular dependent power conversion efficiency measurements of 2D axial microwall solar cells. We address the challenge of cost reduction by proposing to use our recently reported mass-manufacturable fracture-transfer- printing method which enables the use of a monocrystalline substrate wafer for repeated fabrication of devices by consuming only few microns of materials in each layer of devices. We calculated thickness dependent power conversion efficiencies of multistacked Si/Ge microstructured solar cells and found the power conversion efficiency to saturate at %26 with a combined device thickness of 30 μm. Besides having benefits of fabricating low-cost, light weight, flexible, semi-transparent, and highly efficient devices, the proposed fabrication method is applicable for other III-V materials and compounds to further increase the power conversion efficiency above 35% range. © 2015 SPIE.
