Item Open Access Electrospinning of cyclodextrin functional nanofibers for drug delivery applications(MDPI AG, 2019) Topuz, Fuat; Uyar, TamerElectrospun nanofibers have sparked tremendous attention in drug delivery since they can offer high specific surface area, tailored release of drugs, controlled surface chemistry for preferred protein adsorption, and tunable porosity. Several functional motifs were incorporated into electrospun nanofibers to greatly expand their drug loading capacity or to provide the sustained release of the embedded drug molecules. In this regard, cyclodextrins (CyD) are considered as ideal drug carrier molecules as they are natural, edible, and biocompatible compounds with a truncated cone-shape with a relatively hydrophobic cavity interior for complexation with hydrophobic drugs and a hydrophilic exterior to increase the water-solubility of drugs. Further, the formation of CyD-drug inclusion complexes can protect drug molecules from physiological degradation, or elimination and thus increases the stability and bioavailability of drugs, of which the release takes place with time, accompanied by fiber degradation. In this review, we summarize studies related to CyD-functional electrospun nanofibers for drug delivery applications. The review begins with an introductory description of electrospinning; the structure, properties, and toxicology of CyD; and CyD-drug complexation. Thereafter, the release of various drug molecules from CyD-functional electrospun nanofibers is provided in subsequent sections. The review concludes with a summary and outlook on material strategiesItem Embargo Membrane based electrospun poly cyclodextrin nanofibers coated with ZnO nanograins by ALD Ultrafiltration blended photocatalysis for degradation of organic micropollutants(Elsevier, 2023-11-15) Ranjith, Kugalur Shanmugam; Yıldız, Zehra İrem; Khalily, Mohammad Aref; Huh, Y. S.; Han, Y.; Uyar, TamerMembranes with simultaneous selective adsorption functionality and excellent photocatalytic response have been proposed for water remediation, especially for treating textile and industrial wastewater. However, state-of-the-art membranes are easily fouled by pollutant adsorption that impacts their reusability. Here we report the development of a crosslinked electrospun poly-cyclodextrin (Poly-CD) nanofiber (NF) membrane coated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) with ZnO nanograins for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. The inherent high affinity of poly-CD NFs favored the selective adsorption of cationic impurities, and the reactive oxygen species produced by photoirradiation of the ZnO surface effectively degraded adsorbed contaminants. The NFMs has signifies that, even under the dark, they have a removal efficiency of around 80% which may be due to the high adsorption nature. Further, these NFM are highly reusable while decorating the ZnO nanograins on the NFM, which degraded the adsorbed pollutant and opened up the active site to further adsorb the dye molecule on the poly-CD surface. Under the static mode, the ZnO(100)@poly-CD NFM achieved the highest MB removal efficiency of 94.3%, followed by ZnO(25)@poly-CD, ZnO(200)@poly-CD, and poly-CD, which had removal rates of 91.3%, 87.7%, and 83.1%, respectively in 120 min of photoirradiation. Modulating the photocatalytic reaction in a flow channel, ZnO(100)@poly-CD nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) achieved 2.19-fold higher removal efficiencies (98.6% in 60 min) in a flow-through filtration system than under static conditions (a non-filtration method). Furthermore, the flow-through mode promoted the mass transfer of pollutants through NFMs, which increased reactive oxygen species production by inhibiting electron-hole recombination. Furthermore, the inherent self-cleaning function conferred by the photocatalytic activity of surface ZnO increased membrane structural stability and provided a faster removal rate.Item Open Access Poly-cyclodextrin cryogels with aligned porous structure for removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water(Elsevier, 2017-08) Topuz, F.; Uyar, TamerCyclodextrins (CDs) are sugar-based cyclic oligosaccharides, which form inclusion complexes with small guest molecules through their hydrophobic cavity. Here we successfully synthesized highly porous poly-cyclodextrin (poly-CD) cryogels, which were produced under cryogenic conditions by the cross-linking of amine-functional CDs with PEG-based diepoxide cross-linker. The poly-CD cryogels showed aligned porous network structures owing to the directional freezing of the matrix, of which the pore size and architecture exposed variations depending on the composition of the reactants. The cryogels were employed for the removal of genotoxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous solutions. They reached PAH sorption capacities as high as 1.25 mg PAH per gram cryogel. This high sorption performance is due to interactions between PAHs and the complete swollen network, and thus, is not restricted by interfacial adsorption. Given that the hydrophilic nature of the components, the sorption performance could only be attributed to the inclusion complex formation of CDs with PAH molecules. The poly-CD cryogels could be recycled with an exposure to ethanol and reused without any significant loss in the sorption capacity of PAHs.
