Item Open Access Cognitive Comparison of design methods in the conceptual phase(Sage Publications Ltd., 2023-07-12) Gürel, Adel; Şenyapılı Ozcan, BurcuThe initial phases of design, known as the conceptual design phases, are often associated with hand sketching, while parametric tools are reserved for the later, more developed stages of design. This paper examines the potentials of using parametric tools in the early design phases in comparison to widely utilized hand sketching. It is intended to find out the impacts of using parametric tools on the cognitive behaviors and the satisfaction of self-assessment levels of the designers. An experimental study was conducted with a group of graduate architecture students using Grasshopper, the findings of which are analyzed through a content-oriented coding scheme, together with protocol analyses. Significant differences are found between cognitive behaviors of the participants in using hand sketching and Grasshopper. The findings show that all of the participants consider Grasshopper as a useful conceptual design tool that may be utilized in early design phases, in contrast to its wide popularity in the late stages of design.Item Open Access Comparing designers' cognitive behaviors in geometry-based and parametric 3D modeling environments(2014) Tünger, ÇetinDigital design area has been constantly developed by scientific studies, but it is observed that studies in this area have mostly focused on the technical aspects of the subject (i.e. development of new tools and courses). User, tool, and process are three fundamental elements of a digital design system, so there is a need for studies on users and processes as well as tools. This study was carried out to understand and compare the cognitive behaviors of designers in conventional geometry-based and parametric 3D modeling environments within the framework mentioned above. While the geometry-based modeling tools are based on creation and the modification of the geometry, parametric modeling environments include an algorithmic structure underlying the form generation process. The study utilized Rhino as a geometric tool and Grasshopper as a parametric 3D tool. Six design students participated in the study. The data was collected by protocol analysis method and analyzed with a content-oriented coding scheme developed in this study. Results indicated that the cognitive actions of designers were significantly different in geometric and parametric modeling environments.Item Open Access Parametric urban design thinking: shared patterns in design by algorithm and design by drawing(Sage Publications, 2021-12) Calıskan, O.; Barut, Yavuz Baver; Ongun, G.The paper suggests a focused examination of the processes of drafting-based design and parametric design in urbanism. It discusses how spatial design’s settled cognition would differ by using algorithmic systems through the altered relationships between the basic operations in design. To reveal the commonalities and distinctions between the two design methods, the authors present the detailed documentation of the workshop series, which experimented with both techniques within similar design contexts. By the design analysis, the idea of “parametric thinking” is revisited in the specific context of urban design.
